I'm thinking of getting a charter arms 44 special target model-4" barrel. Seems like a decent gun, made in america and not real pricey. Thinking of hunting backup and home defense. Any experience out there?

Please buy it. I've been thinking the same thing & would like to know how you do. I've never even seen one anywhere.

Lam,

Geeeze! Buy that iron!

Everyone knows I'm a died-in-the-wool .44 Mag hunter.
What many do not know is that most of the time my CC gun is a Taurus Model .44 5 shot snub nose(they don't make these anymore) loaded with Speer 200 gr. Gold Dot HP's. BIG fan of the special for self defense especially (about even with the .45 ACP).
I don't think you could go wrong with a 4" .44 special for all-around packin' and home defense.

I have always wanted a S&W 696 they only made them a few years and they seem to be $$$$$ when i see them for sale. To me that is the perfect 44spl.

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

Lam,

Have had and have several Charter 44 Bulldogs, 2.5", 3", 4". They all shoot and carry great. However, one caution! Their "unbreakable" copper / berylium firing pin, is very "breakable"!!! I have about six extras. Nonetheless, if you "dry fire" with snap caps, you will be OK. Great guns, I've had 'em for over 25 years and can't wear them out.
