Finally got a chance to shoot my SRH today, first time ever shooting a bigbore revolver. Damn trigger gaurd killed my knuckle, only fired one cylinder. Never thought it would recoil that hard. Shot free hand at a block of wood that i set out at 50yds, first shot hit next one missed(small flinch due to the first shot)This is a heavy gun to shoot free hand, once i get my rest set up i'll start shooting for accuracy. I need to get new grips for this thing for sure.

pm me your address and I'll send you a Tamer grip. I know exactly where you are. I had one and didn't shoot it much without the new grip on it.

It may help to hold on a little tighter too ;-)
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Rod,
Didn't you put a Tamer on one of yours?

Yes indeed they are a handful. You absolutely need a set of Tamers on it and it will make a world of difference. My .500 Linebaugh SRH started life as a .454 that I bought many years ago. It served me well, and was very accurate. Keep us posted.

I am currently shooting factory fodder Hornady 240gr XTP, when i picked up the gun that was all my dealer had. I recently bought a loading press from a friend, i plan on rolling my own soon as i can afford to get the rest of the required material. Got any load suggestions?

I will have to dig up my loading notes for the .454, but the bullets I was using came from Cast Performance and they weighed 335 grains. I will find the load data for you.

I do not own a 454, however I do own lots of reloading manuals.
LEE MANUAL 250 Hornady XTP AA#9 25.2 = 1558 fps 28.0 Max = 1770 300 Hornady XTP AA#9 23.4 = 1428 26.0 Max = 1623 300 Lead Bullet AA#9 18.9 = 1228 21.0 Max = 1396
Hornady MANUAL 250 XTP 2400 24.5 = 1450 28.4 Max = 1700 AA#9 25.7 = 1450 30.5 Max = 1800 H110 30.0 = 1450 33.9 Max = 1800 WIN 296 30.0 = 1450 33.9 Max = 1800
300XTP 2400 21.6 = 1200 26.1 Max = 1500 AA#9 23.0 = 1300 26.6 Max = 1500 WIN 296 26.4 = 1200 30.8 Max = 1500 H110 26.5 = 1200 31.3 maqx = 1500
As always work up from the lowest listed loads carefully watching for pressure signs. H110 and AA#9 are probably a couple of the better powders for the 454. I would use Magnum Primers.

Don't shoot that hornady 250 x.t.p.past 16oo f.p.s.,its made for 45 colt velocity and will start to come apart and erode forcing cone.Thats why hornady is making the 240 gr.x.t.p mag. bullets,a little thicker in the jacket for the faster speeds,if you have any doubts call hornady techs.
