I'm not talking about baiting our "resident" KYODE, but the four legged kind that always live outdoors! Our KYODE would likely fall victim to a box of glazed donuts!
There is a three day coyote hunt coming up next weekend and I plan on using a roadkill deer in a spot where I can view it from about 250yds but can see to 500++yds beyond it. I already have the deer and will be placing it on Sunday. I don't plan on calling and just plan on being patient. There is a good spot that I always see tracks along a ridge line and workers at the nearby power plant (my dad included) see them going across the worksite in this area quite often.
I'm not sure how many hunters will be out and about so I'd rather take the cautious approach and take advantage of their normal travel patterns through this particular area. The bait will hopefully be inviting enough to get their attention while I send an A-Max or V-Max their direction.
Has anyone ever hunted them like this before?? Would a little calling along with the bait be helpful??
With the range available I think the Lil'Monster may get called up for duty.........will a 162AM at 2825fps be enough??

If there are coyotes in the area, they'll come to it eventually, and depending on how much they're shot at, it may be before sunrise or after sunset. (I call coyotes from Sept thru Mar and then as needed afterwards)Several of the ranches I call, have 'dead piles' and I'm able to take a few via ambush, but the majority are 'called'. If, after you set up and see nothing, calling ocassionally would help.
A 162gr'er at 2825fps ought to be more than enough.
Good luck!

In Colorado it is illegal to bait so I cant say how it will work. The electric calls work very well here though. They are like putting candy infront of a child, they have to get it. We have gutted big game and then gone back the next day to try getting coyotes but every time the pile is gone by the next day.

Ranchers many times will hunt that way if they have a cow die. Good luck!

If you do call over bait don't bother with a rabbit or deer distress. They already ate and it doesn't normally interest them. A coyote distress or coyote/fox fight will get their attention and make them wonder who is around their food.
Good luck and knock heck out of them.

Chris Abbott: With all due respect, baiting of furbearers in Colorado is legal. I refer you to page 3 of the current small game regulations, under the heading: Furbearer Legal Methods of Take, part 7: Hunting furbearers with bait is legal.
For Definitions of Furbearers, see page 1, which lists coyotes as furbearers.
Dan B: I have baited many many coyotes, and indeed been given 2 road killed deer by game wardens in CO. for that express purpose. I have had a coyote come in to a fresh warm bait within 2 hours, but that was probably coincidental. If you have a three day season I would put out the bait in a spot like you suggest maybe 2 or 3 days early, no more. They will clean it up faster than you think.
Back in my fur hunting days I had two articles published on baiting coyotes: "The Trapper and Predator Caller" magazine, October 1987, pg. 120, and "The Trapper and Predator Caller" 1992 yearbook, pg. 66.
Copies available, PM me.

Gregg, That is good to know. I have only hunted a few times for coyotes and not anytime recently. I have gone with friends and that is how I know that the electric calls work good. I guess I should have read the book before I stated what I did, I was simply missimformed by a few friends.

Ive hunted kills several times without luck. If you do I would not call unless as previously stated use a fox fight or canine pup distress call. My favorite call is the Johnny Stewart cottontail. It has worked great for coyotes during daylight and dark. If they are hungry they will come.

Thanks for the input fellas.
I even thought about partially tying it up in a tree with the front end touching the ground and the back end about three or four feet up. Then maybe the day before the hunt, lowering the rest of the deer to the ground.
Sure wish we had snow to see what kind of activity this thing will draw in.....but in the last four days we've had warm weather and rain so there in nothing but MUD everywhere.

I once shot a couple dozen crows and left them in a pile. The next day they were all gone!!! Except for feathers. I'd say it might work. Even better if you do it at night with lights!!!

For some reason this reminds me of a story my dad told me when he worked at the feedmill.
About 15 years ago, a farmer from around here was having problems with coyotes killing his calves. So one night he gathered up a bunch of guys and they went out to where he knew a cow was calving. When they clicked the light up there was a pack surrounding the cow and calf. They got something like 10 or 11 of 'em but didn't get 'em all. But he didn't have calf loses the rest of the year!
I know lots of guys who shoot off bait. If the yotes are there, they'll find it! Good luck!

The bait will work but I think you're a little under-gunned!

If you have any question or hesitation about your state, Call your local Game Warden!!
I have had good luck with the electric calls as well.

I'd get Gregg's articles Dan. I used to read his stuff in T&PC, and it was as good as any of the other articles in there including Gerry Blair's pieces.
I've been hunting off a cow carcass for 3 days now and saw 1 mange dog the 1st day and 3 coyotes the second. We went to it yesterday and there was nothing on it. I actually baited a coyote in once with a pile of jackrabbits and we killed 1 coyote that was hanging around them.
I would also consider calling and howling within a mile or 2 of it at the slow times. They may not be on it but hanging around locally.

Cut some of the bait up as much as possible and put it in a 5 gallon bucket fill it with water and freeze, then take to your spot and dump out of bucket the night before, they can only eat it as it thaws and keeps them around longer. Then put the rest of the meat out the next day and the scent will help draw them in. I have used this method several times and it works and in the cool weather the bait will last longer.

Well the deer has been placed. It's 236yds from my hide position, across a valley and on the upwind side. I have an excellent spot to shoot from.....now the waiting begins until Friday.
I'm going to keep my eye open for more roadkill and may freshen the bait site later through the week if I can find one.
Since it's rather close and I can only see about 100yds beyond the deer, I think my gun selection may change. This area begs for the XP-100 .222RMI (50gr VM at 3200fps). That gun is lazer accurate and has plenty-o-stomp for the range.

Dan,
I have used deer remains from deer we have killed during season and place about 160 yards from the house. And I watch from my warm home. Cheating? But it may take days or weeks sometimes. But they will come to it. It is not the best area due to it being next to a large creek. I have had them come in at 7am, 10 am, even 3pm, and all other times.Hear them at night alot also. If your spot is thick with them then you should have better luck as the competition for food will be higher..
They do like to come in from down wind, so if your down wind they might smell you first. Is there any spot to get parallel from it so your scent may be off from the smell of the bait? Their nose is their number 1 defense and offense.
Does sound like a good time, I plan on getting more into coyote hunting. Best of luck to you.

My position is actually at a quartering angle to the bait compared to the prevailing wind....so I should be ok.

Dan, put on a pair of those tight biker shorts you wear and stuff in a bunch of grapes and a banana before you go to the bar--you'll have the coyote's howling...HOOOWWWWWWWWWllll!!!
