Im probably a little bit "paranoid" when it comes to cleaning my firearms. But Ive noticed over the years I get better accuracy when shooting a revolver that has been fouled. I know most guns shoot better when fouled but it seems there is a big difference when shooting my wheelguns. I always wipe the exterior down with an oily rag but will leave the insides dirty for 2-3 months if I plan on doing any hunting with it. Im just curious how often everyone else cleans theirs?
EVERY time the gun comes home it gets cleaned. some get cleaned during a shoot like my 17 HMR. It will shoot dimes till it gets 50 rounds threw it. After 150 the "Group" opens up to 4-5 inches. It copper fouls badly I think due to a rough bore.
On the other hand I dont think my dad has ever cleaned his 38 in the last 10 years. Im amazed it dosent jam.
I dont imagine your hurting anything and if it shoots better fouled then just give it a good cleaning after the season it over
Love me or hate me. Either way your thinkin about me.
I usually run a mop through the bore and cylinder right away, and wipe down. I don't detail clean every time, maybe once or twice a year. If accuracy starts to degrade, a good bore cleaning is in order.
If it doesen't get wet & hasn't had a ton of lead through it mine often get the wipedown & put away routine. Any moisture & it gets taken care of quickly.
