No opinions or explanations (we'll get to that later)...just a straight up choice if you had to choose only one type of bullet.
CAST (Cast bullet)
-OR-
XTP (XTP style hollow point bullet)

Cast with a big, honkin' meplat -- particularly in the bigger calibers (.475 on up) where expansion is absolutely uneeded!

out numbered and out gunned.XTP Perhaps if you're shooting one of those little .429 magnums -- in which case I even like the XTP, but they don't make an XTP in .510........LOL!

This might have something to do with the critters we all want to shoot. Here in Alaska last thing I want to do is fling a 300gr expanding bullet at a griz or a 1500lb Alaska Yukon Moose. I want total penetration no matter what the angle or how much bone it hits. Not as big a deal with a whitetail. If you do this same pole over here http://forums.outdoorsdirectory.com/ you'd probably see different results.

They've taken some pretty heavy duty animals with the big XTP Mags, they don't just blow apart like you may think. I may be wrong but I believe edwardkfolmar had mentioned on earlier post that he had taken big critters with them but don't quote me on that he'll have to say for sure. Now in all fairness I do load hard cast for my 500 Linebaugh as Hawk makes the only jacketed bullet I know of and I keep a box or two loaded for my 475's but I never shoot them and they are sighted in with XTP's and I do load cast for one of my 45-70 rifles.

Cast.
Though most "westerners" may believe the stigma that "easterners" are thin, lily livered liberals with spectacles, pencil necks and inhalers - truth is true native conservative "yankees" have been hunting big deer, bears, and moose since the the Norsemen first came down the the Newfoundland coast 200 years before the Mayflower was even built across the pond. I don't personally know even one deer, bear, or moose hunter in these parts who would even fleetingly consider any type of hollow point bullet for hunting big game. In fact, most use one type of jacketed softpoint or another in calibers like 30-30, .35 Remington, .308 Winchester, 30-06, 444 Marlin, and 45-70. I know very few handgun hunters up here who take it as seriously and have stuck with it for as long as I have, but the ones that I do know are using heavy hard cast or jacketed softpoints in their revolvers, and jacketed softpoints in their TC's. I know that I wasn't supposed to "justify" my vote yet, but after seeing all of the hoopla for the XTP, I just can't understand the tally. Then again I don't have nearly the "shooting" credentials as many members here. But, I do think of myself as a well rounded eastern deer "hunter".

I guess I don't understand the logic/advantage behind a hollowpoint/expanding bullet for a handgun, 357, 44, 45, 460, 475, 480 or 500. For self defense of 2 legged critters it's so the bullet will not penetrate all they way through. But, don't we want max penetration in a hunting round? Secondly, in rifles, the point behind an expanding bullet is to make a larger wound channel. A .452 or larger WFN boolit is as as big around when it makes contact as a .30 cal is after it expands. But, a rifle bullet has the fps behind it to penetrate. But, most handgun calibers don't. Why do I want say a .451 300gr hollowpoint that will expand and possibly not penetrate, as opposed to a 350gr .452 that will penetrate most any fur and bone for several feet.
I've got some 300gr XTP's and I cast 275, 325 and 350gr LFN and WFN's but I cannot come up with any advantage the XTP HP would have for hunting or bear protection in full house 45 Colt or 454 rounds. But I can come up with disadvantages. Am I missing something? Again, I'm not hunting whitetails.
