I finally got around to shooting this barrel today for the first time since 04. I got it on paper at 100 yds then moved back to 467 yds (hey thats how far it is from the back porch to
that tree at the creek) First three shot group measured 3.4 inchs center to center which won't impress a lot of you guys but it made this hillbilly pretty happy. Second group opened up some, third group even more. The scope was slipping in the rings.
Load
200 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip
62.5 grain of AA-4350
Remington 45-70 reformed
Federal 215
3.128 o.a.l. bullet seated flush with base of neck
GUN
T/C Encore
Barrel 17 inch Virgin Valley with brake, muzzle dia. .925 (too heavy)

Trigger sucks on this frame after I had to replace the hammer last year.
Scope
2.5x 8 Leupold in Warne rings & Virgin Valley base.

better shooting than i can do at that distance. I know my limits and stay within them while hunting. target range i test the limits. Great to here about long range shots from guys with the tools know how and skills though.enjoy long walk to check the target.

A sub-MOA group like this at over 450 yards with a 338 Encore handgun should make everybody happy. I know I would be pumped up.

Tell me about muzzle velocities for this round. I have been doing alot of thinking lately about a rimmed 338 round for the T/C's. Can you post a pic of the round? Thanks, Shawn

About the pic,no can do. This cartridge is basically .338 Win Mag
shortened .400 with a rim. The die for it is a 338 WM die with the bottom cut off. The data I have shows velocities of 2550 fps
200 grain bullets & 2500 with 225 grainers. The velocity for above load should be around 2525 fps. I think I could up the load & get a little more velocity. I don't know if anybody is chambering this cartridge now. It wasn't on MGM's chamberings list the last time I looked.(338x45-70)

Don't know about the .338-.45-70, but JDJones has a .338 JDJ#2 based on the .444 Marlin case. Hornady's #7 list data for it in 200, 225, and 250gr weights.

It's not the gun, but the man behind it.

I shoot the 338JDJ#2 in my Contender and with a 180grn Nosler Ballistic Tip and 50grn of Varget I get 2415fps.
With a Nosler 200grn Ballistic Tip or Hornady 200grn Interlock Sp bullet I get 2310fps with 50 grn of Varget but extraction starts to get sticky and the case won't fall out like with the 180 grn bullets.
It is very accurate. This round uses the 444 marlin case and just necked down.

The 45-70 will give you a little more case capacity over the 444 case. 2550 with a 200 gr bullet... That is 338-06 velocity. LOL The only round that come to mind that will top that is a 338 GNR. 2625 with a 200gr bullet. But I doubt that a game animal wound ever notice the difference!!
