Greetings, this is my first post on this board but I have been following it for a while and recognize some of the names from other places.
I need some assistance in making a decision, I have an XP100 in .243 with a custom walnut thunbhole stock that shoots wonderfully, so here is my dilemma, if I were to re-barrel it what caliber would you guys suggest? I currently have an MOA Maximun with barrels in 250 Sav., 284 Win and 338x350. I was thinking that the 250 and 243 were close enough to overlap so that I did not HAVE to keep both, nor am I dead set on re-barreling. Any and all input will be greatly appreciated.

thanks
craig

how about a 6br?...or an improved version? the 6brx uses the same die as the 6br.......and then there is a 6mm dasher also, but requires custom dies, i think.

check out www.6BR.com for more 6br info

an known accurate gun with a known accurate caliber......sounds good to me

....but then again, you already have a good one in .243. up to you i reckon

welcome aboard and post up about all yer good guns there

Craig,
Not sure what you want to use it for: Target, varmint, deer sized, or larger game?
A 22 centerfire or 17 if you are a varmint or pelt hunter. Maybe a 6.5 or a 30 caliber. Looks like you have the bases covered pretty well.
Another question is, for the type of hunting you prefer, do like a center grip or rear grip the best for hunting?
Is the majority of your hunting deer? If so, what distances would you like to be capable of hitting at?
Do you enjoy LR shooting or short ranges?
Give us a little more info and we will be glad to share our ignorance with you.

XP, I varmit hunt but it has mainly been small squirrel types and I have not been concerned about hides.
I previously had a 309 JDJ and enjoyed it, and I have considered a 308 diameter bbl, but wondered what it could do that the 284 or 338x350 could not. I have been interested in the 6.5x284 but along the same lines what would it do that the 284 or 250 could not. I am not very familiar with this round in a handgun or what it is capable of so any illumination would help.
As far as grip the Xp has a thumbhole center grip which fits me very well, but the MOA has a read grip which is okay. I guess I really have no preference one way or the other. As far as range, I typically use my SS for the longer ranges and my revolvers for shorter distances (custom SBH in 454 and stock BH in 45 Colt).
The Xp wears a Burris 3x12, and the MOA has a Burris 3x9.
The Xp still shoots very well so I have no reason to change it other than for the sake of change itself.

I think that I might lean to something with lighter recoil so my wife is not so hesitant to shoot it, but I do have a JP muzzlebreak out on the shelf that I need to put to use.

Here in SE Idaho we could be hunting it all. deer, elk, bear, 'lopes and if you draw, sheep. I could build something specifically for deer size game since the MOA will handle elk and bear. The last buck I killed with the MOA was at 50 yds and that was with the 338 cal, we were shooting small gopher sized rodents here in excess of 250yards with the XP, and at jack rabbits past that.
So as you can see I am open to all suggestions

I think you have the mid to large sized game covered with the MOA. I would rebarrel to a small caliber, like 223 Rem, 22 BR, or 204 Ruger. Less recoil and cheaper to shoot. Maybe 222 mag with a 1 in 9 twist rate for heavier bullets. If you did go with the 223, 222, or 204 you would have to get a bolt with the .378" face. The 22 BR uses the same boltface as the 243 (.473").

Looks like you are missing something small and super fast. I'm having a 20BR (yes...20 cal) barrel built for my Striker now. A buddy has one for his Savage Model 12 that is SUPER fast and flat.

That 20 sounds like it'll be a sweet little rig. Got a buddy that's shooting a 20 PPC, and is getting some nice fireforming groups at >3700 with the 33 gr. V-Max. Have u seen Blaine Eddy's wildcatting system yet?-- no form dies needed.

I like the suggestions on the smaller calibers. I just had a match-neck 243 WSSM built up in a Striker, but it hasn't hit the range yet-- pretty soon. This rig has an 8 twist Broughton @ about 16", and should send the 105 A-Max out there pretty good. The rig has a 4.5-14X Leupold VX III LR with Varmint HUnter reticle/target elevation turret. This combination should be a terrific long-range late season coyote/rockchucker.

I really don't see a big advantage with the 6.5's over the 7mm's. Brass quality maybe, but that advantage can still be overcome with good case prep. Truth is my next SSP is probably gonne be a big 7mm of some sort due to the availability of a lot of high BC bullets for that cal.

I've gotten into the long-range game quite a bit the last several yrs., and the fascination of what can be done at extended ranges has not, and probably will not wear off for quite some time.
