i just picked up a used 7-30 waters. no matter what i try my group just seem to walk back and forth. i checked scope mounts. so i am down to thinking it the scope. the scope was on the gun(cheap simmons 2x6)so i think its time for a up grade.

I agree. Try another scope.
It's more important where you hit 'em, than what you hit 'em with.

i'd check bench technique and float the forend as much as possible first. consistency shot to shot off a good rest means a lot.

I've had good luck with Simmons, but it could be a dud. Grip tension is one thing to look at, you have to hold the gun the same from shot to shot. Also, resting the butt on a hard surface can mess up groups. When resting the gun on bags I like to position the gun as far forward as I can and I don't rest the butt on anything. Just a couple thoughts.
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Also, resting the butt on a hard surface can mess up groups. That was usually the cause of vertical string for the TCs with me. Either my hands or the grip resting on something.

I have fought vertical stringing for years with T/C's and have come to the same conclusion as some of the other posters. I cannot rest the grip of the gun on a rear bag without getting vertical stringing so I leave it unsupported when shooting from the bench.

good point darrel. the funny things is when shooting both contenders off the same rest with minutes of each other the 7-30 had the stringing where the 375 win didnt. both triggers are set to the same pull. i may just have to swap scopes to see if that helps.

I gave up on TC's for field shooting partly because forend barrel relationship design. at "normal" ranges it is not a factor whatsoever, if taken care of properly and by simple methods. 5 shot groups of 1" down to 1/2", even 1/4" @100 are possible and frequent with break opens. they are NOT a bad design for "normal" people. there are not many people that need to shoot extreme ranges to hunt.
you could also check your sizing die adjustment to be sure headspace is close to what it needs to be. another simple, easy fix.

i will be adding grips and forearm by tonys grips as soon i get them finished. the forearm is 11 inches long with pillers plus bi-pod stud will see it this helps at all.
