I picked up 5 boxes each of 308 accutips seconds from midway a few weeks ago. One is 125 grain square base for the new 30rem ar. The other is 165 bt.

I am loading in a 30-30AI and wondering about the 125's. Does anybody have any experience with Accutips at handgun velocity? How do the Accutips compare to the Nosler ballistic tips in performance on deer sized game?

I did some testing of the 125 accutip in my 30 Herrett. With muzzle velocity approximately 2200 fps, shooting at water filled milk jugs from about 10 yards, I recovered the bullet in the 4th jug. The jacket had separated and together they weighed 98 grains. I would be real hesitant using this bullet in the 30-30AI with a muzzle velocity a few hundred feet per second faster unless I didn't expect any possibility of an up close shot.

For comparison I also tried Hornady 130 SSP at 2000 fps muzzle. Went through 5 jugs and dented the 6th without going through. I did not recover it in the high grass and weeds I had to shoot in.

I also shot a Lee 155 cast with wheel weight and 2% tin at approximate muzzle velocity of 1900 fps. I recovered the bullet in the 8TH JUG. Weight was 141 and expansion to just under 1/2 inch.

Herrettman,

I have been curious about these as well - almost picked up a couple boxes when shopping for 6.5 components recently. My guess is that the Nosler BT would provide similar results at that impact velocity. Have you performed similar tests with the Nosler?
