Found this today and brought it home. Can't wait to load some and shoot it. Dan Wesson 357 Super Mag with a great trigger. Got an extra new barrel and barrel wrench with it.

She`s a beauty...I have a 744 with extra barrels that shoots great. I believe Tigger also owns a DW 357 Max. With the right bullets you should have no trouble with deer or hogs. Good luck

That is a beauty, and with the right load will work great on deer and hogs.

Hawk,

Looks like mine. Great gun. Try Remington 180 grain JHP. They are quite inexpensive and work great up to medium to large white tails.

Very nice gun, and I agree with the proper bullet and within your abilities it should do fine for deer and hogs unless your talking hogzilla then you may rethink things.

That revolver and cartridge will do well for wild boar, whitetailed deer as well as black bear and pronghorn antelope if you can stalk to within a certain shooting range of them. You have a nice gun.

I used to have one exactly like that and I have regretted selling it for years. I put Zebrawood stocks on mine... DW offered them as aftermarket items at that time. I recommend 180 gr. bullets for hunting. Mine liked XTP's but yours may require a different recipe. The 4227's were THE powder for the .357 Supermags years ago, and probably remain the best choice( H-4227 is the only one of the 2 produced now).

Nice looking rig! What length was the other barrel?

AWESOME GUN!! My first handgun was/is the DW 357 Maximum identical to yours. Ordered it in early 1991 and practiced all summer long. I took two deer that fall with the Remington factory 158gr SJHP ammo. I was hooked and have not hunted with a long gun since. I took 13 deer and countless charlies with it until about 1998 or so then it developed a timing problem. I found that DW was in Norwich NY a few years later and had it tuned up. By then I had a couple other revolvers and it didn't see much love for a long time. Then about 2004 I had the shroud D&T and put the bushnell 2~6 scope on it and went after a few more charlies. Not sure I like the scope on it. If I had to save only one gun and let the rest go it would be the DW 357 Max no hesitation.

You are going to like that gun!

Tigger, did you have to get the 357 Max dies or can you use the 357 Mag dies? Where is a good place to get brass?

I'm going to get a couple boxes of factory fodder today and start from there. I have 158grn XTP's and some other sizes and IMR4227, H110, H296 powder. Which do you use?

Most 357 Mag dies will work. The only one that needs to service the length of the case is the sizing die, and in reality you only need to size enough of the case to fully hold the bullet. I resize with a set of Lyman dies maked 357Mag/Max and size the full case for ease of loading.

Remington made the lions share of Max brass. Federal did make some back in the day that was nickle plated and it turns up on auctions every now and then, but usually goes high. Midway has Remington brass listed and avaliable for $25.99 per 100.
357 Max Midway

Midsouth Shooters supply has Remington for $63.11 for 250 pieces and availabe;
357 Max Midsouth

Jamison Internation also has 357 Max brass, it must be made by them of for them as it has JI in the head stamp. This is something fairly new. I have not tried any but would like to. Thier prices are right in line with the Remington brass at $27.58 per 100. If you get some let us know what you think.
357 Max Jamison

Unless you come across some very old stock from Remington or federal there is no current factory loadings available. I know a few custom ammo suppliers do load the Max, Reeds Ammo comes to mind. It's is usually very expensive compaired to rolling your own, and has to be ordered from them.

I use H110/W296 for the 158gr pills, and IMR4227 for the 180gr bullets. All I have ever used are the Remington SJHP's. They shoot well and are economical. I have a box of XTP's but never tried them.

I thought I had more load info on a disc but can't find it right now. Here is a link to a page with laods.

Most loading manuals have Max data also. The other super mags are harder to find. If there is anything else I can help with let me know.

While it is a very nice pistol, it's a little light for both deer and hogs for my tastes in .357?

The .357 Maximum packs as much energy as the .44 Mag, but is easier on the shooter and has better downrange ballistics.

Sweet piece, I shoot the Max in a 'Tender.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

I have used and seen used the .357 mag (I am not drawing a distinction here as the caliber is the same) on both deer and hogs, and while it is a bit on the light side (.357 diameter hole), there is still no replacement for placement.
