Well after many conversations with several of you here and on other sites, I broke down and ordered a 338 GNR today. Now the wait begins until that big brown truck arrives!!!

Hopefully after a season of whitetail, mule deer, aoudad and others, the barrel will be ready to head to Africa!!

I can not wait!!!

I'm sure you'll be happy with it. I've never bought one of his barrels but I own a couple of his revolvers and I've had him do some rechambering for me in the past before I got set up to do it myself and he always did fine work for me.

The 338 GNR is a great round w/ lots of power, I would love to see what this round will do on an Aoudad.

How does the 338 GNR compair to the 338JDJ#2 in the contender?
I like my SSK 338JDJ#2 very much. I shoot mostly 180grn Nosler Ballistic Tips with a full load of Varget. It is a hammer. It also shoots the 200grn Accubond and Hornady 200grn SP bullets just as well.
I have taken several whitetail with this pistol. I have it in a 15" barrel with a MagNaPort Magnabreak on it and a 3x12 Burris scope.

Hawkeye,

The GNR is more comparable to the 338-06 JDJ. It is for the encore frame, if I am not mistaken. Shawn, feel free to correct me.

About 200+ fps more than the 338 JDJ%2. I also have a #2 and like it. I also have a 338-06 JDJ. It is all about the contender vs the encore.

It's more important where you hit 'em, than what you hit 'em with.

I have the 8mm GNR…

Basically, the 338 GNR has 18% more powder capacity than the standard 06 counter- part. When you compare it to the JDJ (basically an improved or AI version of an 06 case) they are compare able. The 338 GNR will launch a 200gr projectile at 2600fps out of a 14-15in Encore barrel. (And 2400fps out of a 14in Contender barrel.) Not too shabby, but again, comparable to the JDJ. The biggest advantage, I think, is that the GNR is a rimmed 405 case…
