I chrono'd John Taffins load in the .500 S&W MAG. today. It was 10 gr. of Unique under a 440 gr.WFN.He was getting somewhere around 927f.p.s. with a revolver.I was shooting out of an Encore 15" muzzlebrake barrel, and was ave. around 1270f.p.s.This a very mild load but with plenty of power for deer, anyway just thought I would share this with you all.I was using C.C.I. 250 L. rifle mag primers which you could just load standard primers for unique so this might have added a few f.p.s. also.

This is an advantage of the big cases, the ability to go high or low in power. However, I would continue to use magnum primers in your .500 with small charges of fast burning powder. In my .50-70 SSK Contender I tried using pistol primers with BlueDot and got poor, erratic ignition. Changing to magnum rifle primers solved that problem. The small charge volume requires a hot primer to chase it around inside that big case....
.
Based on total trigger pull weight, my trigger finger has lifted well over 200 tons....

I use mag primers in all my pistols,.357,.44.454 casull .500S&W regardless of the powder used,I just added that comment because many shooters do not use mag primers with faster burning powders.

johnwilliams, I also use mag primers in everything I load...I figure....why not? Better ignition has got to be better...right. I've never had any problems with the mags.
