I finally shot my 338 GNR barrel for the first time last night at 11:30. Thought I would wake up the neighbors... (they were 3/4 of a mile down the road and were some of my relatives so they would not have been real suprised by me doing this.) A pretty impressive fireball was the result, but not near as big as I would have expected.

Recoil was a little more than my 309 JDJ but not near as much as my 45/70. The load was a 200 gr Hornady over 48.5 gr of RL-15. Touched off another one this morning out the back door.

I expect to get some serious range time in the next week to see what it will do. I will also be doing some in depth load developement with various bullets. By deer season I will be ready to put a serious hurting on Mr. Big!

I have always wondered what the 338 GNR is like. I have the 338JDJ#2 using 444 marlin brass. What parent case do you use on the GNR? Mine really shines with the 180grn Ballistic Tips.
I have taken several deer with mine and it was bang/flop or just a couple steps to the side from the energy of the bullet.
Any photos?

Mike

405 Winchester. From the info I have, I should be able to get an honest 2600 fps from the 200 gr. bullets out of a 15 inch barrel. That almost duplicates a 338/06 out of a rifle!

I was really torn between the GNR and the 338/06 JDJ. When Reeder put the 338 GNR on sale, that made up my mind.

My digital camera is messed up right now... going to have to get a new one, so no photos yet.

Awesome! I just spend some serious range time with my 8mm GNR and 375 H&H AI... I cleared a corner of the rifle line!!!
