Has anyone ever experienced a problem with the loading gate on their SBH's? When I shoot my SS SBh 44mag with factory or handloads my loading gate will sometimes open slightly not allowing me to cock the handle without closing th gate. Is there a way to tighten the gate? Also, have read were many folks have replaced the base /cylinder pin with after market pins to tighten up cyclinder play. Any suggestions on a good quality pin/ Thanks guys!!

I haven't had a problem with my loading gate. I have had my base pin back out when I shoot heavy loads. I replaced it with a Belt Mountain Base Pin that has a set screw that keeps it in. I have heard people just replace the spring on the base pin latch and that works but I like the look of the Belt Mountain Pin so I put one on all my Blackhawks. http://beltmountain.com/ruger.htmKey

They do occasionally have problems with the gate from the factory. I've had to send them back before because inspector #7 didn't do their job. You can send it back and they'll fix it. If you don't have time before a hunt then I suggest tape until it can be repaired properly.

It wouldn't be the first time duct tape was used by me for something like this. I will send it back to Ruger!!!

I just got mine. Lord, I hope I don't have this issue. Might have to visit inspector #7.

Some Blackhawks come from the factory with weak loading gate springs.
For reliability, Blackhawks in 41 Mag and up should been loaded with six rounds versus five. The reason for this is that there is a considerable gap between the breach and cylinder on Blackhawks. If there is not a cartridge rim underneath the gate when the gun is fired, it is possible for recoil to drive the loading gate forward, tying up the gun.
Blackhawks fitted with custom cylinders with recessed case heads do not suffer from this design defect because the rear of the cylinder is nearly flush with the breach and loading gate.
If you are not comfortable carrying the gun with a live round under the hammer, use a dummy round or an empty case.

I always load 6 on all my Blackhawks. My colt SAA gets 5!! I have never heard of this problem before. I think I need to check the spring on the gate. Thanks for the info!!!

It is just the spring. You should be able to load the gun with as many rounds as you like. I don't like Ruger springs so I replace the mainspring with Wolff over power variable springs at 26#. The trigger spring can be bent for a lighter trigger and is OK. Ruger will fix it and if you call them they will send a pre-paid box. They might send you a spring you can change yourself. First take a look at the end of the spring on the loading gate and see if it is in the right place. Sometimes it slips off when the gun is put together. The grip frame holds it in place. You might be able to push it in place with a small screwdriver if it is off.
