I'm thinking about a holo sight for my sbh hunter. I like the Eotech, but it is really high priced. I know I can't sacrifice quality for cheap price, but the Bushnell is half the price. The UltraDot West looks good but I wonder if it will blind me in low light. I also would like to know if anyone is using the Weigand non-drilling basemount for SBH, and how they like it. Thanks, Al

Deep Thought,

Which Eotech are you leaning towards? I have a 557 on my AR, and although great on that platform, would be extremely unwieldy on an SBH...that is unless you're looking towards the smaller reflex sights.

Yes, the smaller. The Eotechs I've seen are very expensive. the bushnell was much better pricewise.

I had a $250 holo sight, can't remember the brand, that I bought at Wally, it was a name brand, not a cheapo. I put it on my 41 mag, Smith PC, and blew it out on the first shot. If one is being made that will take the recoil of the big bores, I bet that it is not anywhere near $250. I have seen the photos of them mounted on FA's.

As iron sights and my eyes don't work so well together, I debated on a holo. I had a customer using a Bushell and liked it alot. Sorry I don't remember for sure what cartridge he was shooting. I on the other hand, after sometime I decided to go with a reflex for the Encore .454 Casull. The choice was between the Burris Fastfire, and the Ultradot LT.
Burris has a on/off switch where the LT does not. It powers off when the cover is replaced. But it also powers off when I holstered it in my holster, Powers right back up as I draw it out,,,so I don't see the need for a dedicated on/off switch. The LT cost alil more, but has a lifetime warranty against Burris 1 yr.. I do like the more compact style of the reflex and they weigh almost nothing.

I have an Optima, now known as JPoint, on my Bisley 45LC and it has held up just fine. It is on a Weigand base.

Rod, too.

I also have two JPoints; one on a .500 WE and the other on my .475 Linebaugh Ruger, customized by Rod. I do not know if the Optima is exactly the same as the JPoint. Outwardly they are but I do not know if the guts are; ie: able to take the recoil.

So far have had ok success EXCEPT for the FACTORY BASE on the .475 L.

More on this in a post soon....

I'm using a JPoint mounted on a Ruger SRH .454. Has handled several hundred rounds without a problem so far.

I bought a bushenell holosite when they first came out. It has been on top of my Taurus 480 ruger for 9 years. It has 700+ rounds thru it many my heavy handloads. The sight has never given me a single problem. I have killed several hogs and deer with this set up. I even had the gun and sight submerged for a about 2 minutes while on a hog hunt in Fl a few years ago. It has been dropped by my son and beat around in a back pack. It has never lost zero. It is in my book one of the best out there. I own two Eotechs, which are made by the same company. You won't be disappointed by either the eotech or the holosight.

Dave,
What brand mount are you using on your Encore? Does it use the TC holes? Looks real clean!

240,,,I called EGW and had them cut me one to the length I wanted. And yes the holes matched up,,,they make bases/rails for many makes.

I also used their 25moa base on the XP-100 rebuild.
Very good product and people there.

The Weaver aluminum bases can easily be cut to any length you want. I have done it to a few, touch up the end with spray paint or Birchwood Casey paint pen.

It does make for a cleaner look.
