Hello Ladies and Gentlemen

I found this site last night and am very excited to start learning about handgun hunting. I have been hunting since I was about 8 (and that wasn't yesterday). When I was a teenager I had a Ruger New Model Blackhawk .357 and was fortunate to take a couple of does with it. I sold that revolver(I wish I had it back) but now I am ready to start over. I intend to read a lot and post little.

Welcome aboard.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Welcome Pat. Always good to have another Texan aboard.

It's more important where you hit 'em, than what you hit 'em with.

Welcome to HH Pat! This is a good place for learning! These guys know their stuff, so don't be afraid to ask.

I want to start out with revolvers. I am thinking Ruger Super Redhawk in .454 casull. The single shots look great as well. I just started reseaching calibers in the single shots.

My specialty is single-shots, not revolvers.
I use revolvers and semi's, but my primary is the SS.
If you decide to go that direction, I would be glad to help.

FWIW-I would start with something like the 45 Long Colt or the 44 Mag over the 454.
I have owned and hunted with 454's (FA's) and I don't think you need that much horsepower and or recoil for most hunting situations.

But, if that is what trips your trigger, by all means, get it.

I thought that the 45 Long Colt could fired from a 454. Or am I mistaken? My plan is to shoot 45 Long Colt for Texas Whitetails and have the 454 for larger critters...when the time comes.

You are right, the 45LC can be fired in the 454. However, because the 45LC is shorter than the 454 it consequently has a "jump" in cylinder before it hits the forcing cone. This usually hinders accuracy quite a bit.

Welcome aboard Pat.
If you reload any of the 3 Super Redhawk chamberings will work just fine. If you do not reload I would go with a 44.
Add Hogue "Tamer" Grips. If you go with a Red Dot I would call Ruger and swap the factory 1" rings for a set of 30mm and use a 30mm Ultra Dot on it. Using a scope the 1" Rings will work fine.

You can read posts for days on this site. Lots of good information.

Good Advice. I do intend to reload and I think that I will use a scope. The Hogue Tamer Grips are a great idea. Thank you.

Welcome to Handgunhunt.com!

you will get a lot of advice here, not all is perfect for you, so pick and choose carefully. Especially, listen to the guys that have tghe real experience, not "what they think should do fine."

just MHO.

Don't know who that is directed at.....

Anyhow, Tamer grips are a great addition and will improve shootability in whatever caliber you choose, particularly with the heavier kicking calibers like the .454. I have two custom SRHs -- one in .475 Linebaugh and one in .500 Linebaugh, and the Tamers make them both much more comfortable to shoot (well, the .500 still isn't really comfortable, but more or less shootable because of the Tamers).
