I been reading about the 10mm handgun for hunting lately and very interested in one.
What gun, barrel, ammo/cast/reloads rounds do you use and effective range on hogs, deer, bear with the 10mm?
Thanks

The 10mm packs about as much punch as a 357 Mag so it is limited in its practicality. If wanting a semi-auto to hunt with I would suggest the 460 Rowland if you plan on hunting big bear and pigs.
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

There is a boar guide from N.Carolina that uses a 10mm with XTP factory ammo....

Double Tap has some great 10mm loads that would work well like their 200 grain WFN. That should leave a mark.

I met the boar guide James is talking about and he ONLY uses a 10 MM when handgun hunting for boar-he loves it. Now he dog hunts and most of his shots are at CLOSE range, but he said that there is no need for anything bigger(caliber). He thought that my guns were a little extreme.

I have had a Model 610 since just after they came out. I do not hunt anything except varmints with mine. I rate the 10mm in a S&W N Frame revolver as my favorite personal defence cartridge. I carryed my 610 as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff for 15 years. Most of my gun fights were with deer hit by cars. The 10mm did a much better job that any semi automatic I have ever carryed for injured deer. If I did not have anything larger to use I would load Hornady 200 Grain XTP's to atleast a Maximum book load. This is based on loading data probably being a hair conservative to take it easy on S&W 1076's and Colt Deltas, neither of which held up well to a steady diet of full house ammo. A Glock 20 is the only semi auto I would own in a 10mm.
My advice is to get a Ruger Redhawk or Super Redhawk in 41 Mag, 44 Magnum, 45 Colt, or 480 Ruger. You will probably like the results in the hunting field much better.

northkid,
Interesting that you bring up the subject of the 10mm. I love it. I have several 10mm's, however, my favorite is a 6" Ruger Blackhawk, limited edition for Buckeye Sports some years ago! It came with a 38-40 WCF cylinder.
I called Bob Baker owner of Freedom Arms to see if he plans on offering their model 97 in an 10mm with extra cylinders for 40 S&W and 38-40 WCF. He seemed intrigued and stated that if there was enough demand, he would build them. Anyone interested should contact Bob at Freedom Arms and let him know that you would buy one if he builds them.
Ted Nugent (Motor City Mad Man), rock star and big time hunter, once finished off a cape buffalo that was wounded and charging him, with his Glock 20, 10mm. Not sure how many shots he took at the buff; but, the 10mm did the job.
Like the guys mentioned, there are "better" big game hunting rouds; however, with the right load, bullet, and proper placement, the 10mm will handle whitetail, black bear, and hogs fine.
