looking into another barrel after the striker gets here. my thoughts are for a .284 of some sort.

.284 win
7mm wsm (already have dies)
7mm RSAUM (thanks E)
7mm-08 AI

going to be a max 16" barrel plus a screw on brake. with that length is there going to be that much difference

looking to shoot a 140 up to a 162.

thanks guys

Tyler,
The 7-08AI and the 284 Win will be very similar.
You typed the 7mm WSM twice.
Were you thinking of the 7mm SAUM as a possibility?

The SAUM is a great cartridge and will give you basically the same performance as the WSM with less powder.
Since you will use a 16" barrel I would choose the SAUM over the WSM.

Now you need to decide whether you want the 284 Win/7-08AI class cartridge or the SAUM/WSM cartridge

yes. not a "smith" but he builds his own 1000 yd bench guns, chambered the 6BRX barrel that will be coming with the striker and is a really good friend of mine. learned a lot from him. we built this and all he asked for was to use the chambering reamer if he wanted to build a heavy gun at some point

what brake are you using and what eye relief scope?

Glad you have someone to build it for you-doesn't get much better than what you described.
Holland's new Radial Quick Discharge brake is my favorite hands down.
The scopes I use are primarily Leupold VX-3's LR/T's: 6.5-20 or 8.5-25. I also use Mark 4's (same magnification range).
NightForce NXS scopes too.
My favorite reticle is Holland's ART reticle.
For LR shooting I highly recommend a good scope level as well-very important!

had that problem once, started with the 7-08 and got a 284 next, the WSM followed and now have the SAUM, all of them are great !!! for longer ranges the WSM or the SAUM would work the best, Ernie's experience will be a great asset in your choosing.

thanks for all the info guys, b day is not today. must have put it in wrong its October 8th but thanks anyway. I am leaning to the WSM as I already have the reamer, gauge and dies. how fast do you think I could push a 162 a-max. my rifle has a 26.5" barrel at about 3075 with them. research ive read shows I should lose about 25 FPS per inch = 250 FPS ish? dose that sound about right? and how is the muzzle blast and felt recoil like on yours Ernie?

I would say more like 300 fps loss to the SP barrel.
I don't have a 7 WSM, but I have the 7 SAUM and the 7mm Dakota.
Both have Holland's radial brake.
Felt recoil is like nothing. Muzzle blast is not bad to the shooter. I wear double hearing protection when practicing and hearing protection when hunting.

My 7mm SAUM shoots 162 A-Max at 2760 fps.
Barrel length is just a tad under 18"
I use H-1000.
My 7mm Dakota has same barrel length, and would push a 200 grain bullet at 2700 fps, so it would run a 180 around 2850-2900 fps.
Not stepping up to faster powders.
I like the Hogdgon Extreme line of powders.

Good guess.
All depends on the particular barrel, etc.
You may get more ( not a whole lot more though.). Mine is the SAUM, not the WSM.

The one KS whitetail I killed shooting a 6.5-284 with 140 A-Max's I had pass through, and all of the antelope we shot last year (4 in all with the 162 A-Max, 7WSM XP-100) were all pass throughs as well.
Good destruction.
I will be using the A-Max again this year for deer and antelope

WSM = Winchester Short Magnum

RSAUM = Remington Short Action Ultra Magnum or just the SAUM=Short Action Ultra Magnum.
A shortened version of the Remington Ultra Magnum or RUM.

Last year I used a 7mm WSM for LR antelope-Wasn't even my XP.

The 7mm SAUM is the XP, I have been shooting since spring.
I will also be getting a 6.5 SAUM barrel for it, a 6-284, and a 6.5x47 Lapua barrel. This is a switch barrel/switch bolt XP-100.

Haven't used a 140 for quite a while (7-10 years) in a 7mm.
Sorry
