After looking for a while and reading on this sight I have decided to buy a.480 ruger. Having a Thompson Center encore and wanting a pistol barrel I have found a 15" .480 ruger drilled and taped for a scope with a 50$ rebate. I bought it, now I need a scope the bad news is I'm 6'4". Does anyone know of a scope 2-5 power or so. with around 26" of eye relief??? as inexpensive as possible. Also the low down on brass etc. who has it on sale... I shop Midway but they don't always have the best price. Thanks William.
I'll keep my fredom, money, and guns you can keep the change!

I think your best bet is an Ultra Dot. Scope eye relief varies all over the place but many are too short and as you increase the power, the shorter it becomes. They are also very dark in the mornings and evenings because the 5mm exit pupil scatters before reaching your eye so the longer the eye relief or higher the power, the worse they get. The finest pistol scope was a 1X but they are not made anymore as far as I know. Some target shooters are using rifle scopes on pistols on a high rail. They way they hold the gun gets it close to the eye but you dare not have any recoil.

By the way, I am shooting smaller groups with a 4 minute Ultra Dot then I can with a scope.

Well it doesn't pay to buy a cheap scope. Now I don't know if you have unusually long arms or not, but you're only a couple inches taller than myself and I don't have any trouble with scopes that have around 20" of eye relief. The only time you notice short eye relief is when you crank up the higher powered variables from some manufacturers (Burris is one). I would suggest that you look at the Bushnell Elite 3200 2x6. It has a constant 20" of eye relief and is a very durable scope. I also shoot T/C's with my left hand on the forend so it naturally brings the gun in a little closer.
You might try BearBasin for the scope and check prices at Midsouth Shooters Supply or Graf & Sons for brass.

I was looking at some of the scopes on graff & sons. Thank you for the heads up. This will be my first big bore gun for the encore and I'm getting excited enough to do some window shopping. I had not even thought about putting my hand on the forend This would help with eye relief as well as recoil. I may just have to get it all together and shoot it 5-10 times to see wich will be more of a comfortable position to me to shoot in. Before I put a scope or dot on it. The ultra dot is not out of the question I'm just gathering information at this point. Thank you both for the input.

I like the magnification of a scope compared to a red dot. A Bushnell Elite 2-6 is a great choice.

The Bushnells have the longest eye relief of any I have used, my problem that they are too long for me. I have swapped a few of my scoped guns to red dots of late, as I like the transparency of them. You should look at both options. It really depends on the max distance you expect to shoot.
Rod, too.

I'm not sure everyone knows this but there is usually some adjustment in the eye relief by turning the eye piece in/out.

Thanks for the tip on Widners it's only 30-45 min. down the road. Looks like they are the place to get brass for most of my other pistols just not the .480. Anyone loading the .480 that could point me in the right direction for loads, and cheap brass.

My understanding is that some manufacturers can modify their scopes to change the optimum viewing distance. Burris did this to one of my 3 x 12 scopes a few years back. You might try calling the customer service department to explain your problem, and ask if they have a solution.

I'm 6'3" and I've had good luck with Leupold and Bushnell.

Graf's has Speer .480 Ruger Brass for 32.99 per 100. This is substantially less than either Hornady, or Star Line which seems to be in a perpetual state of backorder. I have had good luck with Speer brass in this caliber. I also like Star Line, so I thought I would do a quick comparison. My samples of Hornady Brass weighed 194 gr.; Speer 199 gr.; and Star Line 203 gr.. I ordered the Speer because of price, quality and availability. Note this is "brass" brass, as opposed to the nickle plated brass used in Speer factory ammo.

I ordered some Speer for Graf & Son a while back. It looks very good. I plan to order more. The Speer .475 bullets seem to come and go. I would like to try some 325's in the deep curl.
For Glass: Go with a 30mm UltraDot. Check out ultradotwest.com they are $149.99 shipped. Add $20 for a Scope Coat.
I am planning on pulling the Burris 2-7 off the wifes 6.5x30 JDJ Contender and replacing it with an Ultra Dot 30mm she can see through better. The gun drives tacks with a scope, however I think she can kill deer better if she can get on them quicker.

As far as loads go, I'm using 20gr of Lil Gun behind a 400gr cast (Lee mold) in my SRH with good results. 1100ish FPS as I recall, very pleasent, & with my 30mm Ultradot the last cylnder I fired went into 6.5" off hand at 75 yds o a steel plate (for me that's good accuracy). I really like the red dot. Even my 450 Marlin Guide Gun only has a 2.75x scout scope on it. I'm thinking of going red dot on it too. In my opinion at practical 480 ranges (even with an Encore) the dot is the way to go.

18.0 gr. of AA #9 under a CPBC 400/410 gr. bullet gets me 1,096, and terrific accuracy at 50 yds. Smites deer in their tracks. The surplus powder WC-820 is the AA #9 equivalent, and will deliver the same accuracy/celocity.
