XP,

Well, you have to remember I am recommending for a first caliber in an XP-100. The added cost and such for the WSM would be my recommendation for the second XP-100!!!

I would love to head down and join you for that shoot but unfortunately or should I say fortunately, the shop is keeping me pretty busy.

One of these days though I will hook up with you and learn how to do the LR stuff with a handgun.

When the wind stops blowing I am going to test out the 6.5mm WSM with the 140 gr A-Max and 142 gr Wildcat to see what she will do compared to the 6.5-284.

Will let you know.

Good Shooting!!

XPhunter how about posting a bit about the long range handgunning. Distances, ideal calibers, etc for us who are reasonably new to the forum. It may not fit in here.

Ernie,

"284 Win. XP in "hunt mode."

Nice whitetail!!! How long was your shot?

That XP you're holding is what I'd like mine to look like. I wasn't aware that you could get stainless actions. Is that one nickle?

Kirby,

That's exactly the type of advice I was looking for. Thanks for taking time from your busy schedule at your shop and shedding light on this issue for me and many others here.

Happy Holidays...

My home is on the market now and hopefully when it sells I can talk the wife into a belated Christmas XP for me...

I struggled for years over rests that would be portable and still deliver adequate accuracy in the field when shooting varmints - especially with my XP-100. I tried bipods (couldn't see over the grass), camera tripods, shooting sticks, and a bevy of other commercially manufactured and homegrown rests. I finally solved the problem by attaching two Harris 1A2-25 bipods to the bottom of a piece of 1/2" plywood. I screwed an MTM ammo box to the top for additional elevation and I carry three small sand bags in a fanny pack. Few groundhogs escape this setup. It sets up easilly and is just the right height for shooting while seated.

Gary, are you still using this portable bench rig or have you something more evolved by now?

I'm fairly new here, but this has been the best read, yet. What a great discussion and I don't even own an XP but it was still informative.

Welcome to LR fun John!
You have been doing some reading of older posts and I have evolved somewhat since then (probably most of us could say that ).
Ask away, and we will do our best to answer.

xphunter/Ernie...I plan on doing that! I have so much to learn and you all are light years ahead of me. I anticipate a great deal of fun, though!

Man this is the thread that never dies - started in 2004. Yep I'm still using the same rig except my XP is now wearing a 3x12 Burris. A big improvement over the fixed 7x in the photo.

One of the systems i came up with was from calling coyotes with the handguns. If there's any shooting that'll challenge a hunter it's gotta be trying to get a bullet from a SSP into one of them from the sitting position i use while calling. Here's what i came up with--

Wal-mart sells some soft-sided stadium-style seats that can be customized to allow for very accurate sitting shooting from a tall Harris bipod. If u look at the webbing they use to tighten the system up while sitting in it u'll see that the snap is not attached very close to the seat itself. If u resew it so it attaches closer to the seat, when sitting in it, it tightens up to your back real snugly, and PROVIDES EXCELLENT back support. With your legs brought up together, feet apart, the center grip HG fits snugly between your knees, and along with the tall bipod, it can be really steady, not far removed from a benchrest really. BUT DO NOT FIRE IT WITH THE BASE OF THE BIPOD PULLED AGAINST YOUR KNEECAPS! I did that once and never will again. Darn near pulled my kneecaps off upon recoil. I missed a dirt clod on a dirt bank couple years ago once using this system by 4" windage @ 1000 yds. with a center grip XP 6.5-284/3-12X Burris BP/tgt. turret.

I agree-- this really is a great topic. Fun to talk about.

Thanks Gary. When you use this rig are you seated on the ground or in a chair or on something else?

I've been building and hunting with XP's for almost 25 years. I prefer mid-grip. It's more balanced and easier to get on target, especially with the long barrels I have on mine.
One advantage the rear grips have is with bipod use which I rarely use. Another is variety of aftermarket triggers.
I have several calibers from 223 to an upcoming 338 Fed. My favorite all around is the 308 Win. It's the most versitile. In my 308's I can push a 110 gr bullet faster than a 85 gr out of my 260. And of course I can still shoot 180 gr's with enough velocity for the bullet to perform well on game. I've had mixed results with 243's & 260's with heavy bullets.

There is no advantage, keep the Encore!!! Ha! I vote center grip because of the balance factor. I had a rear grip and it was great from the bench, but was a bear to hold as steady on a stalk type hunt. Way yoo much weight up front. JMHO!

SS - this sounds interesting but I am not sure i understand which seat you are using from Wal-Mart. Can you post a pic or give the manufacturer/model? Thanks. One more question... Where are you resting your arms, on your knees?
