Just ordered a 41 Mag barrel for my G2, ... should be here this weekend. Im looking for a good deer load. I hate to start the cast vs. jacketed bullet debate, but ... Nosler doesn't offer patitions in .41, so Im thinking Swift A-frames or cast.

Anyone try the 265 Grizzly loaded ammo? If I can't find components I might try them.

Thanks,
-240

As a life long cast bullet shooter I'm going to suggest you try any of the many quality jacketed bullets for your whitetail loads. I've never had a problem with cast in over 40 yrs of using them on game but I do believe there is a time when jacketed might make more sense.
If you are hunting small parcels of land, some place where a deer might escape onto another piece of property, even though its well hit then jacketed might offer some advantage because of bullet expansion.
Any of the Speer, Hornady, Sierra type bullets that are accurate in your gun will get the job done easily if you do your part. The only caution I might offer is, if you are shooting from an elevated stand to make sure you can "see" the vitals from any angle, that is, don't make the mistake of shooting over the lungs & under the backbone, there's a small area there that can get any of us in trouble, its more of a problem for the guy sitting in an elevated blind that for those of us that hunt from the ground. Good luck.

My friend sixshot offers good solid advice based on many years of broad based hunting experience in a hunter's paradise.
I enjoy using a .41 Mag. My preferred load is a 210 Sierra JHC driven by 21 gr. of 296 and CCI 350's, for about 1435 fps from my 7 1/2" FA and 1400 fps from a 6". Your Contender barrel will probably run a bit faster.
One current problem is that it has been difficult to find .41 jacketed bullets from the major "discounters" like Midway, or anyone else. I've been shopping for the above Sierra for about 6 months. Luckily, I still have a couple hundred loaded, and plenty of other calibers to shoot.
With regard to the Grizzly ammo, I've never shot it. Actually, I've never used any factory ammo in the 30 plus years I've been shooting .41's.

I cannot provide advice on the Grizzly ammo. However, my 41 mag load for my FA M83s is 210 XTP & 20 gr of 2400. This load is likely a little hot for S&W revolvers. However is should be OK in your TC. For me in my guns it is very accurate and the XTPs perform well on deer sized game.

I have also had good success with the Remington 210 JSP loaded over 2400. My old standby load for my S&W M657 is 17.5 gr with the Remington 210. It has put holes in one side and out the other various times on deer sized animals.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

240,

Have you considered the Barnes 41/180 gr XPB? Solid copper XPB bullet, works like dynamite on antelope and deer. They have them at Graf & Sons. http://www.grafs.com.

240,

Despite my recent success with the 210 Speer Gold Dots, I'll throw a vote in for the 210 XTP's...they recently became available again at several online retailers after nearly a year of backorder. I have had excellent performance out of that bullet design in a variety of calibers on deer and hogs. But the Speer has performed admirably as well!

Anecdotally, I know of several 41 fans that love the Rem 210 JSP that wtroper referenced, having great success on deer-sized game.

Good luck with the 41!

Well, sounds like jacketed bullets are the way to go, ... at least in this case. I'm gonna head out to Cabelas and see what I can find for .41 bullets and brass. I've got a gift card thats burning a hole in my pocket!
Thanks fellas! I will keep you posted.

When I had a 41, I shot a few deer with the 250g Winchester factory load... worked exceptionally well on deer
always complete pass through, big hole..

Well, made it to Cabelas today! I bought their last box of xtp's & a 100 pieces of win. brass. Since I didn't buy dies, I picked up a couple of box of Winchester Supreme 240 gr. platnum tip ammo for the .41. They are on sale for $27.00 a box.
This will get me going. I need to pick up a scope for the G2. If I can't swing it, my unscoped .45 blackhawk will be riding on my hip this Nov.
Talk about waiting to last minute! wheeew!

Gary used Winchesters 41mag 240gr Platinum tip ammo to take a 150lb boar with a S&W m-57. His story is in the recent article list. The recovered bullet showed perfect expansion, so if you use it in your G2 you will get that much more velocity and penetration....Good luck.

I was going to suggest the 240 Platinum tip. From my 7.5" hunter, it went 1290 and you barely felt any recoil. At 90 yards, I busted both shoulders of a whitetail doe one afternoon. It completely destroyed the front shoulders and I was actually able to find the slug. It had expanded to .72" and weighed in at 238.7 grains. Picture perfect slug when you see it. She went about 3 steps after the shot and fell down a small hill, can't ask for much better than that

I just got through testing a bunch of Grizzly ammo and have to say that I am impressed with the accuracy of every load I tested. Very high quality ammunition.

Sorry for the thread hijack!

Well, I should be all set with Winny Ammo. I wonder if you can buy the platnum tip bullets and roll your own?

Whitworth, .... what calibers/loads, did you test?

The 240 gr Plat tips worked well, as did the XTP's , but my favorite .410 bullet is the Speer 210gr JSP. Its an old design, but it shoots well out of all my 41's and gives good penetration and expansion. Its worked very well on all of the deer and hogs Ive shot with it.

I think the plat tip is a factory only proposition best I can remember. They did some component pieces at one point for muzzleloaders with Sabots but they did not have a cannulure.....GS
