A friend of mine is in the process of picking up a lightly used( less than a box)Tauras Raging Bull in .44 Mag.. Does anyone out there have any thoughts on this revolver?

In my experience, Taurus' revolvers are a real hit and miss proposition. I have handled and shot some really good shooters, and have seen some real horror stories. I like 'em a lot if they shoot well. It's really unfortunate as they have their place IMO.

I have a Taurus m- 85 5 shot .38spl, and it shoots very well for what it is. But I have not had any experience with the Raging bull.

I had a 454 Raging Bull that I hunted w/ for a few years and I really liked it. It was accurate and a real pleasure to shoot. I traded it in for a pistol for my wife. No regrets though.

From what I have read, the Raging Bull series of Taurus revolvers are well made, and for the most part satisfactory to their owners. From personal experience, I have three RB revolvers two in 454 Casull (8 3/8" and 5"), and one in 480 Ruger (8 3/8"). The guns are relatively heavy as compared to
S & W, FA and Ruger. They are well made, and mine are very accurate. In his stories printed in the Sixgunner, the "Hitman" extolls the virtues of his 500 S & W RB. All in all, I think they are a great value for the money.

I reckon I'll chime in here. I had a Raging Bull .454 and I was glad to get rid of it. I had to wear a bandana on my face because it was spitting something back at me. My lady friend could tell when I had been shooting it because my face would have bleeding dots on it. I have had quite a few revolvers since the Raging Bull all of which are larger calibers and they never do to my face what the Raging Bull did. I will never own another one. It was an accurate handgun however.

Perhaps, but you shouldn't have this with a brand new out of the box gun, IMO.

Rod, too.

I have had that same problem with an out of the box BFR. The manufacturer replaced the cylinder with a slightly longer version to tighten the barrel/cylinger gap. I would have thought they would have just set back the barrel, but the manufacturer said that would have resulted in a forcing cone that was "too long".

Very true, and that goes for all manufacturers of stock (not custom) guns. Both long and short. I would not decline to purchase another gun from one that made a bad one that I happened to receive, but I would not buy another if the problem was not taken care of satisfactorily.

John Taffin had a favorable review on the .44 Magnum Raging Bull in his "Book of the 44".

Taurus has a bad rep but I was talking with a guy from Davidsons today as I'm getting my dealer account set up and he was saying that because of the volume they put out they still have some problems from time to time but their quality is better than 4 or 5 years ago and they have gone to an unconditional life time warranty. That being said I know guys that have had less than satisfactory treatment from the customer service people there but maybe that has improved too.

I had a very unfavorable time with thier customer service and after a year and a half and two guns I was stuck with thier junk and absolutly no satisfaction. The local taurus rep was even ashamed of my treatment.

I would not take a taurus if you gave it to me.

I have no personal experience with Taurus, however being in law enforcement i work with alot of "gun guys" and none of them have ever said anything good about taurus.

The original question was limited to the Raging Bull Taurus Revolvers. Do the reports of quality problems with Taurus pertain to Raging Bull Revolvers, or do they concern other Taurus guns.

I think the Raging Bull is a good looking revolver, i actualy came close to ordering one at my dealer in 454 casull. But i was steared towards a SRH w/9.5in barrel instead and just love the gun. Most of the bad things i have heard about Taurus stems from the autos.

I never thought much about it, as that is the way they come from the factory. However, if the noise is a problem (they are REALLY loud), it seems the most cost effective way of unporting the gun would be to re-drill (if necessary), and tap the porting holes them plug with a very short stainless plug screw.
