I have a Ruger Super Redhawk in .454 Casull with Hogue grips and a Leupold 2x scope. Do any of you have one that is Magnaported? If so, how effective is the recoil reduction? I see many Magnaported revolvers on various posts but have never had the opportunity to fire one.

I can't speak for the SRH in 454, but I had my mod 29 Magnaported & it made a noticeable difference with 320gr loads @1340fps. I considered having my 480 SRH shipped to Magnaport before it even came to me but didn't. So far the 480 hasn't been painful to shoot with Hogue grips. The factory grips are not near as pleasent. Are your Hogues the Tamer with the blue Sorbethane insert?

I would much rather load down a little than put holes in the tube if recoil is an issue. If you haven't tried the Tamer grip, do that first, it does wonders.
Most critters won't notice much if that 300 passes through at 1,200 FPS or 1,500 but that is only MNSHO ;-)
Porting is a last resort.
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Porting is a last resort. I agree completely.

I agree with all above, do not magnaport it. The Hogue Tamer grips are around $21. A very cheap way to reduce felt recoil in a Super RedHawk. Another Option: The 454 has a reputation for Sharp Recoil. Trade it for a 480 Ruger. Bigger Holes, more manageable recoil. What's not to love. Seriously the grips will go a long way in recoil reduction on a Super RedHawk.

That's not a bad idea. I have had both calibers in SRHs and the .480 was a great caliber for the platform. While not soft recoiling by any stretch, not nearly as sharp a recoil impulse, and you cannot argue with the fact that it makes a significantly bigger hole. That said, you can always load the .454 down to more manageable levels -- it really doesn't need to be pushed so hard to work.

The reputation of sharp recoil with the 454 was one of the reasons I chose the 480 (I also wanted the bigger hole). I have some issues with arthritus (sp?) in my hands, especially my shooting (right) hand. Even clapping can hurt sometimes. With the 7.5" 480 with the Tamer grip, 400gr cast @ 1150 (finaly found my chrono data & they were faster than I remembered!)there is no punishment to the hand. I have enough confidence in the load that I hope to chase brown bear with them yet this year.

I have a custom SRH in .475 Linebaugh, and one in .500 Linebaugh, and the Tamers really helped a bunch -- I shot both with the factory grips and neither was very pleasant -- not that they are pleasant with the Tamers, but much better! LOL!

I have had a number of handguns MagNaPorted. It reduces felt recoil, and muzzle flip. If you go that way, do NOT get the rifle style porting. I prefer the Dual Trapezoid style, which I find more effective for handguns.. They also offer what Ken Kelly refers to as "Linebaugh" porting because it is used on a number of guns in the Linebaugh calibers. It is the Dual Traps porting with the addition of one other port on the top of the barrel.

I have a SRH in 44mag that I had Magnaported only because my FA 83 454 was ported when ordered. A friend has an identical SRH in 44mag not ported and I cannot tell any difference at all.
