I ordered my 35 Bullberry barrel from Bullberry Barrel Works I am guesing in the early 1990's. It was a nicely finished Blued Super 14. As I recall it came with some load date that I no longer have saved. I ended up using 39.0 grains of H322 under a Hornady 180 grain SSP (Single Shot Pistol) bullet, from my correspondence with Lonerider he is using the exact same load, so that was probably the most promising load listed. Brass is fireformed from 375 Winchester cases. Most of the case taper is taken out upon firing. The case measures after firing: at the rim .414, at the Shoulder .410, it has a neck length of app .277, and an Overall Case Length of 2.016.
My objective was to end up with a Rimmed cartridge in between a 35 Remington, and a 358 JDJ, that did not require expensive custom dies to reload. The information I got at the time was to use 35 Remington dies with the sizer adjusted to just neck size the case. This does not work for long. In short order the loaded round will not close and fire. Lonerider who also has one, told me this could be taken care of by sizing the base area with a 375 Winchester die with all the guts removed. I happen to have 375 Winchester dies, however Jerry Rigging the reloading of this ammo has been one reason I have not used this barrel more than I have.
I was doing a little research on line and found ONE LONE SOURCE of reloading dies for the 35 Bullberry. C & H-4D (1-740-397-7214) lists them as a Group F Die Set at a cost of $78.25. NOTE: They manufacture dies for thousands of rounds.
I called C & H-4D yesterday (a little after 5 PM) and talked with the lady normally on the recording you get most of the time. I not only got my reloading die set on order, I found out that they have 6 more sets on the shelf already made up, and ready to ship. I thought this bit of information might be helpful to other 35 Bullberry owners who have been less than impressed with using 35 Remington/375 Winchester dies to reload this cartridge with.
I checked the velocity on 3 rounds for Lonerider the other day, and a 180 SSP was traveling at 2248 FPS at about 15 feet from the muzzle. (3 shot average)
I did not find the 35 Bullberry listed any longer on the Bull Berry web site. It is a fine round, however I would go another course if I were ordering today and go with either a 35 Remington Rimmed (303 British Brass using 35 Remington Dies and a 303 Shell Holder), or a 358 JDJ (444 brass and a 358 JDJ die set). A 358 Bellm (444 case resized in a 358 Win Die with a 444 Shell Holder) might be on my list, however I did not find anything on it my last trip to Bellm's web site.
I should have the 35 Bullberry die set about a week before Missouri Deer Season opens. I should have time to shoot up all of my loaded ammo, pull bullets on all that will not chamber, and reload enough fresh ammo to verify Zero, and hunt with. I am planning on using my 480 Super RedHawk to start with, and may switch to the 35 Bullberry or my 6.5x30 JDJ Contender for my second deer tag.

cool!

i have the 35 remington rimmed in a contender. the barrel a factory 35 remington super 14", with a counterbore cut for the rim.
i made 150 cases from winchester 303 british brass. you run the british into a 35rem trim die and cut off the excess. then deburr etc n run into the standard 35rem sizer. you have to fireform them to the final shape. it was a bunch of fun and great practice to fireform 150 cases with blue dot powder and 158gr hornady xtp's(.357" pistol bullets).

my load is also 39.0gr of h322 with the 180gr hornady ssp. i get 2188fps. it has accounted for 3 deer at around the 200yrd mark. one a nice 13 point that rough scored in the mid 130's with no deductions.

it has been my first choice for deer for a few yrs now. i like it a lot.

lonerider was a good bit of help while i was developing loads etc. it is kinnda funny that i ended up at the load he had used(39.0gr of h322). he had recommended powder n bullet etc, and even told me the max load he had been up to, but not his final load. we ended up the same!

if i were doing again a 358jdj might be an easier option. i'd probably not load it to it's potential though. 2150+fps with the 180gr ssp works great as is, and is all the recoil i need. ssk barrels are pretty pricey though, if a jdj is chosen. hmmmm....one could do a rechamber a lil cheaper maybe. but, overall i'm happy with the 35rem. it's all i need.

35rem rimmed and 30-30AI are my two choices for contender deer rigs. i want to work another load for my 30-30AI with 150gr balistic tips sometime. my current one uses 130gr ssp hornadys, which are on the soft side at closer ranges.

lonerider is a great fellow. a man can do worse than to listen to his advice from experience also.

The 30-30AI should be a top chambering in a Contender. My brother has one, only in rifle length. I am very impressed with it. If I were to buy an additional factory barrel today to go with what I have, that would probably be it.
In a Contender a rimmed round works best.
I am with you, the load I am using in the 35 Bullberry is about all that I enjoy shooting recoil wise. It should kill about anything you would want to shoot, stone dead out to 200 or possibly 250 yards if you know the yardage to the target, and have a very steady rest.

What makes the .358 Bellm different from the .356 Winchester?

How do the 180 hornady ssp perform on the deer you have shot with them?

it hits em like a ton of bricks
thats what i like about it. dead is dead....and i havn't had to track one with it yet. so....good performance for me.

every one i've killed has been around the 200yrd mark though. i've yet to kill one at what i consider short range(100 yrds n in)with it yet. but if it kills at 200.......
;\)

last yrs season i only hunted 3 days, didn't see much, was only gonna kill a good buck, n went without a deer. i think the deer herd is down from what it was at one point in that area, so i'm kinnda layin off the does.

The 180 SSP works well at short range also.

Difference between 358 Bellm and 356 Winchester? Not Much except the reloading data is not as hot for the 358 Bellm.

I do not believe I have a Reloading Manual with 356 Winchester Data in it at the moment.

358 Bellm Reloading Data
Brass Formed from 444 Marlin
Reloading Dies: 358 Winchester
Shell Holder: 30-30 Winchester
Max Trim Length: 2.200
180 Grain Bullet
H322 44.0 grains = 2262
H322 45.0 grains = 2289
H322 46.0 grains = 2346

308 Bellm
Brass formed from 444 Marlin
Reloading Dies: 308 Winchester
Shell Holder: 30-30 Winchester
130 Grain Bullets
IMR 4895 40.0 = 2126
IMR 4895 42.0 = 2275
IMR 4895 44.5 = 2432

Hornady 150 Grain Bullet
IMR 4895 39.0 = 2107
IMR 4895 41.0 = 2191
IMR 4895 43.0 = 2341

There is also a 7mm Bellm which uses 444 Marlin Brass and a 7-08 reloading die set. It requires a 358, and I believe a 308 sizing die to form cases from the mighty 444. It will drive a 120 to 2547, and a 139 Hornady to 2374.

Bellm rechambers barrels from other chamberings. Such as 357 Magnum, 357 Herrett, 357 Maximum, 35 Remington to 358 Bellm.

Bob R,
Thanks for the load stats!
I'm a shooter of the 308 Bellm and I appreciate a fellow shooter post his range of loadings and results. We need more like you out there! I usually use the Nosler 150 gr. ballistic tip @ 2200 FPS and I find them effective in every situation.
I have a lot of respect for Mike's work...yours too. Thanks for the tables.
Jimmy

Bob R , I have a 35 Bullberry also ,& started forming & loading the same way. Changed to CH4D dies also ! Another change was to go w/ 30-30 brass , some new but lots of once fired range brass works . I run it thru 30-30 dies first then check 35 BB fit. If it's a go, it continues to "adulthood" as 35BB. Good loads from Re7 now, but want to try Leverevolution sometime, as it cleans everybody's clock in 30-30 & 35Rem for my TC Contender tests ! I still yearn for a 358 JDJ ( Had 375 JDJ Handcannon, now Encore rifle ), but really can't see it worth much more than what I have & hunt now. Plus the fact I've got Encore barrels in 307 Win & 45-70 too! Enjoy that 35BB !

I have had the 35 Bullberry in the ladder stand all season. The C&H 4D Die set has made all the difference in the world owning this wildcat. As I said above I was neck sizing with a 35 Remington die to start with. This was not the hot set up at all.
With the C&H die set reloading the 35 Bullberry is a piece of cake.

I made another change for 2015. I pulled the old Burris 2.5-7X Pistol Scope, and replaced it with a 30mm MatchDot optical sight. The 30mm MatchDot is different from a 30mm UltraDot in that it has multiple dot sizes. I keep the MatchDot on 2 MOA. The UltraDot is a fixed 4 MOA Dot. It also has an elevation knob. I find the 2 MOA Dot size to be better than a 4 MOA as you have less Bloom early and late when the light gets dim.
Why a Dot Sight instead of a more precise Pistol Scope?? The 30mm MatchDot is much quicker and easier to get on target under field conditions. Accuracy is good enough out to as far as I will make a shot on deer.

I have been using an UltraDot 30mm on my 480 SRH for several years now. I will be ordering 30mm MatchDots in the future when I need another Red Dot Sight. I believe they are worth the extra $$.

I was on the Starline web sight the other day. They now have a longer 38-55 shell case for sale. The long 38-55 case and the 375 Winchester case should both work fine forming 35 BullBerry Brass.

With the Long 38-55 Brass available from Starline, as well as 35 BullBerry reloading dies being available from C&H at a reasonable price. I have changed my tune on the 35 Bullberry. I would recommend this round with no reservations. Case forming is easy. At this time I see nothing I do not like about the 35 Bullberry. Plenty of knock Down Power. About all the Recoil I can enjoy. Easy to form cases. The 35 Bullberry has a Rim. Available Brass to form (38-55 Long). The Hornady 180 SSP bullets have a very good track record on game. It will also shoot the Hornady 180 XTP and Remington 180 grain 357 Maximum bullets when available.

Back to Deer Season 2015. All I have managed to do so far has been to Count Coup on several Does. (Put the Red Dot on them for practice aiming at game) So far the Big Buck has been on a different time schedule. He has made a nice FRESH tree rub on a 2" Plus size tree about 70 yards from my ladder stand, so I know he is around.
Now I am waiting for December 19, Alternative Weapons Season to start Round Two.

Bob R
