Would a 2x scope on a 44mag sbhbh be good out to 100yds or would a 4x be better? Any other red dots that are sturdy like the ultradot but have different reticles-I prefer a circle with a dot in the middle (.)-sorta like that

I have used my 2X scopes out to 200 yds-- however a 100yd shot is about as long as I would take--50 should be no problem

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

It really depends more on the size of animal and how much cover the animal is in when you're trying to take a shot. For deer sized game, 100 yards in cover can be a challenge with a 2x.

i've used my 2x6 trophy out to 200yrds set on 2x. if i have time, i turn it up to about 4x, n yes it can be better....or it can be worse...lol.

well....that is on a contender. i've had a 2x burris on my redhawk forever. it is all i need on it. but.... i do not plan on 200 yrd shots with it either. then again....200 meter steel rams are no problem with it.

at 25-35 yrds in the woods, 4x would be a hinderance to me.

it depends entirely on the situation!....and personal preference.

I just mounted a 2x Leupold on my 9" G2, ... it really brings out my twitching on offhand shots. Im thinking red dot with no magnification may have been the way to go. Especially at the short ranges I shoot.

I must admit, I am sucker for handguns scopes. I buy every used one of almost any of the Big 4 (Leup, Burris, Simmons and Bushnell) that I find a good deal on from individuals and I have had great service from all of them, but I think the red dot is hard to beat for most hunting situations out to 100yds. I have recenty purchased a T/C 1.25x4x28mm scope used and in good shape for a great deal. I like the options of having some variable. I was at the range yesterday zeroing in my hunting loads and did notice a small reduction in group size. Of course all my shooting was done at the 50 yds line so I can't comment about the visability at 100 yds. I know I need more practice at 50 before I jump to 100 with a handgun. But for me, I would need at least 4x magnification at 100 yds.

I have used 2x on my FA 454 with no problems at 100 yards.
For me, and where I hunt I prefer the 4x, but that is just me.

2X works well at the range @ 150 yds with my TC Encore 460. I happen to like it better than the Aimpoint reddot. Just hope it works as well in Illinois in 2 weeks!

How steady can you hold it. I use a 2X on my 29 classic and 50 yards is good. beyond that you need a really solid rest. Your target area gets really small.

Where I hunt in Illinois for long shots I utilize round hay bales with my bag on top. I use a stool to get high enough to lay on bale with elbows planted so I am very steady. For woods hunting in mornings I sit on ground and use sticks. Not as steady as a bag, but my Mossback sticks work great for 75-100 yd shots. Remember, when target shooting you are a loser if you don't hit your mark. With large game, you have generally a 2-inch margin of error and you are still a winner--with a dead animal.
