I was up at my buddies shop butchering our elk the other day when my daughters came in and said there were deer outside. My buddies shop is out in the woods where he plans to build his new house but at this time he only has the shop and stem walls for the house in. I went out and sure enough there were three blacktail does out feeding. I haven't deer hunted at all this year as the weather has been weird, clear and warm. Blacktails are almost completely nocturnal by nature but throw in moon and starlight and warm temps and you won't see them much during daylight. I only had one gun and that was my old three screw I converted from 357 to 44spcl and I have it loaded with 200gr Nosler sporting handgun bullets. I was able to get within about 15yds and at the shot the largest doe bucked like a mule and took off. This was at the last shooting light so I gave her about a half hour and followed finding her only about 40yds into the alders and blackberry bushes. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get pics as none of us had anticapated shooting anything and since we were already butchering we just dressed, skinned and butchered her right then and there. The bullet destroyed the heart and lungs and although this little hollow point isn't something I'd use regularly for hunting it did a fine job. I have this bullet running around 900-1000 fps according to the data but I haven't chronod it yet.

Here is a pic of the gun.

Way to go Rod. Cute gun ;-)

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Rod--that is the perfect side arm--with a little thump--I would love to have a S&W 696--but there is not many around and most think they are made of gold --

as for bullet I think Speer makes a 200 Gr GDHP that is designed for the 44spl--like 1200 fps max

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

Elmer never "handgun hunted", but since he always had one with him he ended up killing 60+ head of big game as targets of opportunity. Good job on that deer...

Impressive.

I've taken 2 deer with the .44spl's in the 780fps range, (one by accident), and both kills made me think, "Why do I need magnums again?".

Good job.
