Hi Iam new to the forum I am sure get asked alot of questions . Iam lookinf for something for 95% whitetail .iam thinking a 44mag had 1 years ago & shot a 4 poiint with ,but ended getting taken (long story)I want something reliable & accurate .Iam considering the ruger super redhawk & blakhawk hunter as well as the s&w 329 xl along with the tarus raging bull .Iam thinking alonger barrel is better is that correct ? where should I start looking & is there any other choices out there ? I like the 9.5" barrel on the super redhawk.Ive also considered a 454 but wonder if i really need that .

Hi madarcher, & welcome!
The 44 mag is a good choice. If you favor single actions then the Blackhawk Hunter is the way to go. If you prefer double action then the Super Redhawk is a great choice (I prefer the 7.5" barrel), orany of the longer barrel (6" plus in my opinion & I prefer the 8&3,8") S&Ws, either the 629 series(stainless) or the 29 series (blue).
My current favorite go-to hunting handgun is a 7.5" SRH in 480 (44 mag is plenty for whitetail) with a 30mm Ultradot sight, but I still love my 8&3/8 mod 29 with the same sight.

Welcome to the forum! A 44 mag. is a good choice in either the super redhawk or super blackhawk. It's juat personal preference about a single or double action. As for the raging bull, I can't say from personal experience but from what I understand it is a 50/50 handgun. Some are good and some are not so good. As for the 454, that can really be a handful to shoot if you are not used to shooting big bore handguns. You could shoot heavy 45 colt loads thru it until you build your confidence with it then move up to 454 ammo. If you reload; then that is another story in itself. Heavy 45 colt loads will do the job though.

The longer the bl. to a degree the better. 7 1/2, 8 3/8 or 9 1/2 in bl. will work great. The longer the bl. the longer sight radius you get(more accuracy) That means more weight but it also means less recoil. If you were to get the 454 in the ruger super redhawk I would go with the 9 1/2 in. bl. That's just my personal opinion though. Good luck with your selection. If you have any questions the guys here will be happy to answer them. Good shooting.

SRH = Super RedHawk :-)
The 480 was a cartridge Ruger & Hornady came out with 8 or so yrs ago. I love it & think it's a great all around handgun round for Alaska (home for me), but the 44 mag is plenty on whitetail & cheaper to shoot!
Yesm you can get Rugers Magnaported.

I would go for the SRH or Blackhawk (double/single action),your choice, in .44 mag or .45Colt. Either will take whitetails easily, and ammo is easy to find. Wait on the .454 until later.

You really can't go wrong with the .44. There is a plethora of loading components and factory ammo for it.

The super redhawk is a double actionhandgun that also is made in the 44 mag. I don't think you can mount a burris speed bead on it but I am almost certain you can put a dot sight on it. I think it would have to be a 1 inch tube. I only say this because ruger supplies you with scope rings and they are for 1 inch scopes( I think ). The super redhawk is like the redhawk on steroids. It is built on a heavier frame than the standard redhawk. I believe you would be pleased with either the super redhawk or the super blackhawk. They are both built like a bank vault.

i love 44 mags and have a few but really there's several factory 454 factory available rounds that are 44 mag level, plenty of 45 colt loads that are easy shooting and available and so i'd get the 454. why buy one gun to eventually move up and need another when you can do the same through one and just move up based on loads.

30mm rings are also available from Ruger.
I put a Weigand mount on my SRH that uses both Ruger mount slots & the rear sight lug & enables you to use any Weaver style rings so I could mount my 30mm Ultradot.
