4:30 wake up to the most annoying beep beep beep I could find on my phone. Kiss the girl and on the road I go. at my parents house by 5:00 talk to Dad (he has to work at 8 but usually is able to pop one in the field with the smoke pole before that, Lucky). Get dressed and swap the bow vest for the realtree orange gun season one. put on the back tag, throw 5 or 6 of the new 3" 20 ga lightfields in one pocket and gloves in the other. holster the 10.5" scopes super BH and grab the savage 220F. in the truck and on the road for another 20 minutes. still plenty dark on the walk to the stand. Up we go, click in the safety harness and load up.

First shot I heard was 6:34. NY says shooting time is sun rise. This was about 30 mins early. whatever. 7 rolls around and its looking good. this property is 40 acres and loaded with sign. I shot a nice 7 point from this same stand with the bow a couple weeks prior. range was 6 yards. even I can make that with the .44. more shots ring out some close others a ways off. 7:50 here it comes, crunch crunch crunch down my mowed trail. Stand up slow this tree moves alot because its so small, slowly turn head to take a peak.

"see any yet?" says the land owner. "nope" thinking to my self probably wont now but oh well his land and he lets my hunt for nothing and cut anything needed to make trails and lanes. "well let me show you the other stands I put up and Ill walk back to the house with you." off we go. back to my parents place by 8:30. wonderful. just my luck opening day lately. last year I climb up to find my stand gone and the year before it rained so hard I was soaked through in 20 minutes.

Dont want to hunt out behind the house now and screw up and deer hiding out back there. the neighbor to the north is putting on drives already. 10 guys and a couple ATVs. I hate Deer drives up thats the way it is around here. so I decide to hang out around the house because they pop into the field all day and I might get a crack at one.

12:30 I go out to unload the ATV from the trailer and park it. I look out back to the wood like. 4 deer coming down the edge. I grab the new striker and get to my shooting bench as fast as I can. set up the SP, I took a wind reading earlier and it had not changed. the RX1000 popped up with a 496 yard reading. plug it in the shooter program on my Android. 10 MOA up 2.6 wind correction. Dial it up, they are all still standing there calm. turn up the scope to 18X. scan each one. all flat tops. no problem. pick the biggest one and turn the scope back to about 12X. she is coming up a rise a little at me. the scope I using has a target dot. put it on her shoulder...breathe...back off the scope....breathe...squeeze...BOOM! I dont feel or hear the shot. three tails go back to the bigger part of the woods. I see a white flash just over the rise. on the ATV and bust ass getting out there. there she is. dead just over the rise. NO ****! could not beleive it. the berger 95 VLD hit right of POA about 1 MOA and caught the neck/spine. Bang flop. the area around the entrance was mush. very impressed with the ballistics, terminal performance and accuracy of this SP.
turned out to be a decent opening day after all!

thanks for all the help guys, and good hunting

Good job, your day was waaaay better than mine. Another typical opening morning here in Dutchess County. Shots all around me but all I see are the little gray tree rats. Still a good day with the 309 JDJ laying in my lap.

Congrats, and if I am correct, the phone program you are using is likley "Shooter". I used it once up at the ranch we hang to make a first round hit on a 550 yard small plate with my 6x45. My shootin' buddies have just gotten used to this high tech redneck, and shake their heads a lot at me.

Enjoy the grillin', you earned it.

thats the one. it works great. I am thinking of buying the kestrel unit that links to the phone with bluetooth. its expensive but should make the program even more accurate.

Tyler,

I was wondering if the kestrel feature was as you describe. Man, I thought I was bad, but you are worse

If I showed up for a hunt with bluetooth wind for my droid, I would be sleeping in my Jeep for sure. That is up until the gang wanted me to play DJ in the evening with all the music on my phone. Now if I could just get the droid to line up the shot, and perhaps pull the trigger...........

I would rather use technology on the longer shots. its not fair to the game to guess and make a lousy shot because of it

Hawkeye,

Sorry to jump in if not invited, but if you use Tylers first link above, at the bottom of the page is Sean Kennedy's email link. I would drop him an email, as being the developer he would know about his product, and perhaps might know of Apple products.

And as an aside, not being an apple user, I was wondering whether there are any gun/shooting type programs in the Apple Market? I know Jobe's runs a tight ship with respect to development. Just curious.
