I have a S&W 500 P/C 10 1/2 barrel and looking too scope it with 4 ring set up. I looked at 2x and 4x fixed and couldn't see any better with scope. I do wear contacts so that the reason I guess. I started looking at variable power knowing it might bust do too gun but you would think they have something by now. I do know they all recommend 4 ring set up. What do ya'll 500 mag. shooters have for scopes.

Hi Dave, I've got a Leupold 2X on my 8 3/8" model: If I had a gun like yours, I would probably go with the Leupold 4X in a set of QD rings to easily switch from scope to iron sights. Have fun deciding!

I had a 2x Weaver on my 460 XVR and went with the 4x Leupold just for greater magnification. Nothing wrong with the Weaver though.

Dave. have you considered a red dot sight such as an Ultra Dot? Might be worth looking in to.

I used the Leupold 2.5-8 with the Warne steel base and three Leupold Rifleman vertical split rings on both my XVR and 500 and the combination worked great on both of them.

Hey thanks for the info. I have an EO-tech on it right know but where I hunt I can really reach out with this pistol and the scope is needed. I looked into this for some time now and learned that a 4 ring set up is a must.I talked with some that have variable power and are holding up well. And the ones who just use 2 ring set up learn the hard way.

one thing you will find depending on the variable is the spacing on the base may not allow for all for rings but even so three works fine. I use four on my fixed power but on my variable Leupolds I use three because of the spacing problems. The three ring set up has worked for me on a 45-70BFR ,460&500 S&W, and the most violent are the Ruger conversions in 454,475 Linebaugh, and 500 Linebaugh. your trying to stop scope tube deflection which is worse at the front so either set up two rings in front or move the single ring forward of center between the turret and objective.

Thanks for the info WAPITIPAC. I'm gonna go with the Leupold 2.5x8x28 but also looking into Burris 3x12x32. The onln problem I have is that no one has them in stock so I can't see them unless I order. Would be helpful if someone has both so I could P-message and ask further-?.

I have both...send me a PM and I'll try to answer your question. If you're set on one of the two you've mention, to top a 500 mag; I would suggest the 2.5x8 Leupold. But that's just me....I think the Burris would be WAY too much scope for a 500.

Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

I thought I saw something on one of the sites that they were closing out the 3-12 as it was being discontinued but don't hold me to that. I'd double check with burris but I've used both scopes and I liked the 3-12 on a single shot but it's too big physically and in magnification to be of benefit to the 500. My XVR would shoot MOA at 150yds with handloaded 260gr Nosler Partitions and in most hunting situations you'll be lucky to have the time to crank it up unless your treestand hunting or real long range hunting or I should say at least in the terrain I hunt.
