I don't know what happened to the first one, some type of error.

Good buck there!!

The .41 Magnum is my favorite pistol cartridge. I have owned/shot the .41 since 1979 and took my best 8pt. with it. It's a T/C contender 10" that wears a Bushnell 2x6 scope. It's my go to gun in the woods where I hunt.

I used a Mastercraft 210 gr hollow point. I don't think that they make them anymore. I hand load, but, I bought several boxes of this ammo to get some cheap factory reloaded ammo, that also used Starline brass. I find that components are easy to get for this much too overlooked round. I feel that for rounds of it's power level it does what the 357 and 44 do, but better. It is as flat and fast as a 357 and hits just as hard as a 44. Many who tend to be Internet experts always think of it only as a 'tweener. It takes a lot less powder to get the same power level as a 44 with a similar bullet weight. I know this from my own experience. I believe that gun writers call it ballistic efficiency.

Here is a photo of the pistol. It has a standard Belt Mountain base pin, with a screw to keep it tight. This is the one issue that I have had with Rugers. The base pin likes to pop out. It has the regular aluminum grip frame, and aluminum extractor housing. Some folks agree that the aluminum frames help keep the screws from working loose on both. I have had the ejector housing screw to loosen on steel housings, but, never the grip frame.

Fine buck Ted!
I have a 4.5" BH in 41mag that had a fair amount of work done to it that I carry for my backpacking/fishing/bowhunting backup gun loaded with 265gr hardcast. I may be replaced by a 4&5/8 45 colt BH that I have, but if it is the 41 mag will go in my son's "hope chest".

Hi Vance. You know the internet has really made for a lot of armchair experts on Alaska.

Geez! I can't believe that you are not carrying a 500 magnum. I love my .41, I hope that it lasts for a long time, it is my working pistol.

I consider the 41 with a heavy bullet to be at the lower end of acceptable (but aceptable none the less!). It penetrates well & when it comes to a charging brown bear, the truth is only a shot that hits the central nervous system is going to stop them "right now". With that in mind a .410 265gr slug that gets to the CNS will do the job as well as a 500 S&W mag that does. Difference is the 41 mag is light & easy to pack so I'm more likely to have it with me when I need it, & I can shoot it better. If I get my 45 Colt BH going it will represent a good happy medium. Bigger bullet, same small package, still very shootable. I would love to have a 4.5" BH in 480 Ruger made some day.
The 10mm autos loaded with heavy (for the cartridge) hard cast bullets have become popular woods carry guns for bear protection.
If a guy had money to play with you can but used but as new S&% 500 mags up here fairly often for under $800, & $700 isn't real uncommon. They sound like a good idea (& for the right person are)....

Thanks Vance, I was kidding about using a 500 mag. It seems that the natives in Alaska use ordinary, every day calibers, like the .270, .44, 41, and the like. Seems that visitors always need to power up, with the big boys. Caliber creep from the non-experienced? Or, maybe, the guides don't like taking chances. Prolly, the latter. I have a 500, but it is only because, like many, I just have a need to have the biggest, even if it is not needed.

THat's a very nice deer. Congratulations! I like .41 Mags, too and was shooting one, a FA 83, just yesterday. Most .41 Mags are extremely accurate, because everything was standardized at .410", rather than .427-434" or .451- 457".

I too have a 10 inch .41 contender tube with the 2x Leupy, and i can't say enough about this as a deer slaying combo. Just keep shooting the thing, 100 yards is a self imposed limit, certainly not the limit for the round or the gun. 3 years ago i shot a doe out of a Texas ground blind at what i thought was the far end of my self imposed 100 yard limit however my range finder hadn't made it to the blind with me. Everything just looked good, broadside, steady sight picture, not to cold. She dropped like a sack of hammers. After walking back to the truck to see about picking her up I ranged the shot from where she hit the dirt(inside her original tracks) to the front of the blind at 167 yards. Interestingly i probably wouldn't have pulled the trigger if i had known the actual distance. What i learned was that my ability to recognize a good shot when i saw one was better than my ability to predict my absolute limits. So my advice to you is simply practice practice practice.
