Just picked up a Ruger Redhawk 7 1/2" 44mag with integral scope mounts on rib--one of the scallops is cut very shallow..the other three are cut cleanly to the top of the rib..it does hold my rings securely however Im concerned that over time with hot loads it may let loose...
What do you guys think--send it to ruger or not be concerned?

If they are not all cut the same I would send it back, if it were me. Maybe a scope will never come off..but it would bug me to have it different. IF it ever DOES come off, guaranteed it will be at the worst possible time.

Not sure if a scope would fly, but depending on which side of the rib the shallow crescent is cut, it could limit the E/W adjustments of your scope if it tilts the one ring relative to the other. Just the fact it isn't right would haunt me.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

I have to agree with this. It too would bother me and it may never give you problems but rest assured that when/if it does, it will be at the worst possible time.

It is a Super Redhawk, right? You keep throwing me off calling it a Redhawk!

A lot or RH's were also cut with scope ring cuts on the barrel rib.
As long as two cuts are the same on one side of the gun and the fixed side of the rings go there, windage will be OK. Not the other way. If I remember, the recoil lug slot is in front so the cut outs must be the same on one side of the rib.
Now Millet rings can be adjusted side to side as can a few others.

I don't recall seeing a Redhawk with the scallops. Are they pretty rare?

They think they are hunter models.

You're right -- I have seen those, they just aren't that common.

if they are rare....i didn't know it. i've had mine for nearly 25yrs(87-88?). as far as i know they didn't call the redhawk a "hunter" till recent. they were simply a redhawk...."with rings" or without. best i remember any kind of "hunter" designations did not start until they came out with the super blackhawk hunter model, the first time, then discontinued for what seemed like eons(early 90's?). glad they brought the sbh hunter back so i could finally get one!
