How many of you load the Hornady 300gr XTP in a Ruger Super Blackhawk and load the bullet to the second cannelure?
Fixing to load some up and gonna try the second (longest OAL) crimping groove.
Thanks.

1.8 Ruger Mag--I load mine over 18 grns of 2400-
Great load for just about any critter
If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

I just loaded up 40 rounds last night. No problem using the second cannelure. Plenty of room @ OAL of 1.725".

Thanks for the replies. I will be loading this weekend.
Am I correct in thinking this will allow ~2.0 grain increase in powder charge over the shorter length?
Thanks.

Rog NO, too much powder increase. Seat at the lower groove and use 20.5 gr of 296 with a Fed 150 STANDARD primer. That should give you 1" or less at 50 yards. The 300 XTP is a great bullet.

I have an article covering this very question. I can email it to you if you would like. Send me a PM with your email address.
My pet load is 24gr of H110 and the 300gr on the 2nd crimp line. It shoots under 2in at 100 yards out of my 9.5 scoped SRH at 1350+FPS. (Safe in my SRH, reduce by at least 20% and work up in your firearm. Sorry about the liability clause.)
430 Man, if you would like a copy of the article PM me with your email address.

Oh, and PS, I personally called Ruger, Hodgdon, and Hornady before loading the suggested loads in this printed article. All three gave the green light.

I also go to the second line. They look sooooo much cooler don't they!!
Plus, I would think accuracy would be improved because of the shorter bullet jump. There is just enough room in my SBH cylinder. I also load my cast bullets so that they take up almost the whole cylinder.

Well, I loaded up a small quantity of the 300 XTP loaded long. Did a lot of research on the net, read the articles supplied by TCMan (thanks!), and also looked at all my load manuals.
Interestingly, Speer shows data in their #12 manual with 'their' 300gr bullet seated to the rear cannelure and they are going to 22.5 grains of H110/296. OAL is just short of what the Hornady 300 XTP is loaded long.
I will hopefully get to the range soon. Just too busy with work. If it wasn't raining today, I'd be at the range... but alas, I really got too much work to do right now anyway...
