I have the bug! Big Bore is so much fun!!! This was my first time out and loaded 25 rounds.

21.5 Lil Gun
355 gr Leadheads

The first shots were mostly high and left but off the target,open sites at 25 yds. I did settle down and these were my last 2 targets. I had so much fun don't know when I going to shoot my 40 and 45! The only problem is the cast bullets at $80.00 per 250 and the new brass. Still beats factory prices by a mile.

Nothing stirs the soul like big bores. I have a SRH 480 as well, with the looong barrel. Great fun.

The SRH 480 is fine accurate hunting gun,IMO the best shooting & handling of the big guns. Shoots like a 44 to me.

I love my 480. Its accurate and packs a fine punch!

Thanks for the welcome, really a lot of great info on this site. I've been thinking of casting my own bullets and found an RCBS sizer in a store yesterday for $130.00 but I just don't know if I want to get into it.

I did order the Ultradot 30 from Midway last night. I found a promo code on line that saved me $10.00. I read so many raves on HH that I'm following the advice and going to try it.

If you have the factory 1" rings and they are in newish condition call Ruger and ask to trade them for some 30mm for your SRH. Or, you can get the scope base adapter from Weigands to use the Weaver style that come with the sight. Leupold also makes 30mm rings for the Rugers, black only.

You won't be disapointed in the UltraDot.

Thanks for the heads up on the rings, I never thought of it. Called Ruger this AM and they said no problem send the 1" back and they'll ship me the 30mm no charge!!!

That's great customer service. Had I known this a few years ago, I could have saved some money! LOL!

I also picked up a brand new SRH .480 with open sights and got to use it this weekend. It was 1/2 the price of the .460XVR. I was the poster a few days ago who was going to get the .360 until I had it alongside the .480. I put a box of 325 grain bullets through and really enjoyed it. A wonderful gun and nicely balanced. I also have a .357 magnum with a 6" barrel and the recoil is not so much different on the SRH. The bullets sure put some big holes through the backboard. I want to discover the difference in firing 400 grain bullets--I'm sure it kicks a lot more.
Please can you explain why someone would want to change the scope rings?

Now I'm looking at putting together a reloading kit. No kits (Lyman, RCBS, Lee, Hornady) impress me (incomplete or some dodgy items), so I'm going to assemble one around a Forster press on the recommendation of several reloaders. Hope I'm not becoming a reloading snob. If I do, the .480 put me up to it.

But I have rifles to reload too.

The guns come with medium height 1" rings. If you need taller 1" rings for a big scope, or 30mm rings for a red dot they will exchange them if in new condition.

Congrats with the SRH it is really a nice pistol. I bought the Hornady kit about 2 years ago and really like it. If you piece together you can get the parts you like most and maybe save a few $ if you find some items used. Reloading is the only way I can shoot the 480 and not take a loan out for it.

I love my 7.5" SRH with 30mm UltraDot!
You might check into Lee products for both casting & loading. I've been using Lee's 400gr mold & tumble lubing with Alox (I actually use a bulk product called Xlox) with good results.

I'm really close to starting to cast my own but I have to ask is it worth the work? I like the Lee set up and they will make a die for the 480 as a custom die. Does the tumble lube really work or do you have to pan lube?

Do you cast for other reasons then cost of bullets?

Joe, cost is the primary reason. It makes HUGE price difference. For the 480 I'm using plain base bullets (no gas check) so WW lead at $1 per # = $.07 each, or &7.00 per hundred, or $70. per thousand. That's for a quality hardcast bullet. Pretty hard to beat. I drop mine straight into a 5 gal bucket of water for quenching to harden. The tumble lubing works fine for me. Would something else do better? Maybe. Maybe I'm not picky enough. I know there are guys on here that can EASILY out shoot me, but I don't think I can blame the lube
