In a word, no......

I have a revolver in .50 Alaskan and it is more than enough to convince even the hardened that there really isn't a "need" for more.....yikes!

I fear some of Whit’s firearms and that thing is more than intimidating. That thing makes my 375 H&H look anemic!

Jeffx, do you think you could fan this one... LOL

I wouldn't mind shooting a couple of rounds as long as I didn't have to pay for them.

The article says because of the weight,(over 13 pounds) the recoil isn't too bad. I bet Whitworth's 50alaskan would be a lot worse.

So, yeah, I'd shoot it, but wouldn't want to feed it, or carry it around the woods for very long. I don't think my belt is strong enough.lol

There's a movie of this being shot on youtube I think. There is also a video of either this on or another in 600 Nitro being shot by people wearing helmets. LOL

That made me cry laughing. Think the scope survived the recoil or the slaming on the wall behind him!

Does anyone know how many grains of powder that case holds?

It holds from 145 to 178 grains of powder dependent on which one is being used. Top muzzle velocity is about 2300 fps with a 900 gr bullet which equates to over 10,000 ft/lbs of muzzle energy. This is with a rifle barrel. The pistol would drop it to about 2100 fps with said bullet. Which gives 8815 ft/lbs of muzzle energy. Reloading data can be found here:

600 Nitro Express Load Data

This sounds like someone wants to go Elephant hunting with a handgun.

I have no desire to have that cartridge in a handgun that I own.
Would I be willing to pull the trigger with that cartridge in the revolver? Yeah, I would do it.
In the Encore? No way.

This cartridge is not my cup of tea.
I am having a big boy specialty pistol being built.
Won't use it in Africa.
It will work awesome for LR though.

What are you having built?

JD Jones built one that was the .378WBY case cut to 2" & necked to .50 cal & put on a bolt action single shot. A fellow I knew was testing it out and he let me shoot it. I shot it six times & my hand was turning numb but I had a smile on my face.

Not a single NE cartridge in a double will be loaded to 2,300 fps and in fact, the .600 is usually limited to about 1,900 - 2,000 fps -- this is where they are regulated. This is with a 26-inch barrel or so. Why anyone would attempt levels anywhere near this in a handgun is beyond my comprehension. Like I said, touch one off in my .50 AK and see if you really "need" more!

Sorry for the OT for the original poster, but it does relate, in that a lot of people will not want to shoot it, because it is a BIG case at high pressure

WyoJoe,
It is a secret!

But is it bigger than the SSK case though...
Before you became a member of HH, this thread got started:
http://www.handgunhunt.com/forum/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/75386/page/26/fpart/1
Currently, it is a couple of weeks from completion.
Scope for it should be here soon!

I was just going by the data poated on Reloader's Nest. I went back & checked the data to see if it mentioned the type of rifle it came from. All it gives is the barrel length of 24".

I saw that load data, so it's understandable. The NE cartridges featured a big case to keep pressures down in the heat and to throw heavy lead at moderate velocities. I don't recall the .600 ever loaded over the 1,900 fps mark or thereabouts. It has enough case capacity to exceed that considerably I would imagine! I cannot imagine how unpleasant even at that weight that revolver would be to shoot!! But the weight pretty much precludes shooting offhand! LOL!
