Good job. At that distance he must have looked a lot like that grass all around you. Was good just to see him I'd bet. Still white around here, envy you.

Gregg,

I still have a bunch of Hornadys SXs around. Old school is right. Same school I went to, apparrantly! How much damage to the pelt with the SX? Looks like things are warming up in your neck of the woods. No snow! It is snowing here in MT as I look out my study window. Good to see the ankle business hasn't messed up your aim!

Thank you HoggHunter, and all of you guys, for the nice words!!

Several of you have commented on the lack of snow here; yes you are right. It's been one of the driest winters in quite awhile (here on the east side; but the western slope is getting lots of snow.) Yet, it was March of 2003 where we got one of the worst snow storms ever for this area...over six feet. That was quite a mess. My horses were snowed in at a ranch several miles from our place and I had to get to my backhoe and drive it some 15 miles in order to get to them and feed them; yep that storm caused quite a mess; I heard of horses that were stranded and died.

As far as the lack of snow...last week there was one day when there were THREE wildfires burning here in the front range area; including one within a mile of our house. Thankfully 2 of the 3 (including the one here) were contained fairly quickly, but the one near GOLDEN (Indian Gulch Fire), was just recently "contained" after scorching 1700+ acres.

OK...getting away from bushwhacking my own thread, I want to address Doc with a Glock's Q on the performance of the Hornady .223 SX's.

In my experience with them on coyotes, (maybe about eight or ten, not really enough to be the last word) I have this observation: If you hit them behind the shoulder, roughly broadside, they do not exit (ie. the fur hunters "perfect bullet") If you nick 'em up around the edges, they tear the hide pretty badly. I went to this bullet because it is the only one that I have tried that stayed inside the 'yote with a good solid hit, and boy it drops 'em right there; I think the guys on here say "DRT."

Sounds and looks like fun. Thanks for sharing with us Gregg.

Getting spring fever bad here in Montana. Did get out with the kids Sunday afternoon and did a little Gopher shooting (between hail storms)and had some fun. My longest hit was 129 yards with my new Fa's in 22 mag. Sorry, had to brag a little.

Hi Smoky,

JP Enterprises discontinued the mount for their J-point sights that fit Ruger Single Action Revolvers. There is a way to utilize a Weaver-type mount that works; however it is not as sleek and clean as the JP mount.

I have had a few of these mounts custom machined from aluminum blocks; and have one or two extras. Don't know if I want to sell them, however.

Sorry, that I can't be of much help; you may PM s4s4u; I believe he has the situation worked out for the Weaver-style mount.

hey gregg nice dog, unfortunately here the weather and everything else has kept me down but in coastal lands here coyotes are either 15yds or 1500yds because of the terrain but the pacific rim is one of those things unless you've hunted it you can't appreciate it. I've hunted from Oklahoma west to Oregon and this is the most miserable hunting country I've seen except for elk. I've found decent areas to chase elk but dogs and deer are one of those things that you better be in excellent shape and quick on the draw. There is no time to watch and excercise patience you either shoot or you don't and 9 times out of 10 the critter will make a fool out of you. I'm hoping once my gun work is caught up on I'll be able to spend some time chasing predators.

I won't be wronged. I won't be insulted. I won't be laid a-hand on. I don't do these things to other people, and I require the same from them. John Wayne-The Shootist

Gregg, Thanks a million for your assistance. I ended up calling a lady at Ruger in customer service and asked her if the Ruger New Model Super Blackhawk had the same rear sight assembly as the Ruger Super Redhawk and she gave me the "exact" same part number , so I looked on JPEnterprises and ordered their mount that said for double action Rugers. It arrived today. I Mounted it right on my 4 5/8 Super Blackhawk! It seems to be tight and sturdy thought I'd let you and others know. Thanks again! Smoky

Smoky, I certainy do not doubt your findings and am glad that you found a working combination for your gun.

The question of J-Point sight bases for Rugers has come up here several times, and there was a model made by JPoint specifically for Ruger Single actions; that was discontinued. I own two of those originals and also two that I had custom fabricated.

To further research the subject, I just got off the telephone with "Duane" at Ruger Customer Service, (603-865-2442) and he reassured me that the part numbers of rear sight assemblies are definitely different between Super Blackhawk and Super Redhawk models. He even went so far as to give me these part numbers for Super Blackhawk rear sight assemblies: 700-30, 700-41, 700-42; 700-43. And specify whether it has a "bump" under the sight or "no bump."

And he gave me these part numbers for Super Redhawk rear sight assemblies: 700-38, 700-39, 700-40.

As I said, I do not doubt your findings; but this is appearing to get a bit confusing.

This thread has gotten off-track and I am starting a new post under Shooter's Forum on JPoint Bases.

Does anybody else out there have any input? If so, please respond on the new thread.
