I always wonder if this is a good compromise bullet between the 240 and 300 grain bullets too.

Dave, I `ve never used this bullet on game, however, Speers factory load using their 270gr JFP in my 8" Dan Wesson gave me 3" groups at 100yds. I recently purchased a box of these bullets and have to work up a decent handload. Like you, I figured this weight bullet would be a good compromise giving a little more velocity then the 300 grainer`s and a little more terminal ballistics then the 240`s. Hope your the first guy on the block to take something with it....

James Ill give it my best effort, coyotes are the only game for now but it will be fun trying,Speer data gives 19-21 gr of H110 with only a100 fps spread for velocity. My most accurate load is with 19.5 gr H110,they seem to be a very easy bullet to get to shoot real well at least in my gun.By the way Ive enjoyed your articles in the archive.

I used the 270 gr. Speer factory load to take Karakul and Four horn rams with my Taurus model 44. This combo worked great, but I will tell you that this bullet will not expand as rapidly as a HP bullet such as the XTP or A-Frame.

In my experience and some testing it seems like it doesnt like to expand much. I used it in a Taurus (cant remember the model) with 6" barrel. I was curious so I shot into blocks of newsprint soaked for 36 hours and it just wouldnt budge. I think out of 3 tries one of them barely started to expand but it was barely noticeable. I know game animals arent made out of wet paper but I have shot dozens of different bullets into this medium and it reallly acted like the medium-hard lead solids I've used. Just my two cents, oh and I used factory loaded ammo so I didnt bother to chrono it, dumb on my part but it was a full power load I know that.

It sounds like it might be alittle hard for deer hunting and such, might not be my best choice.

Dave,

I've shot several whitetails, 160-200# wt, and 2 cow elk. The load was 19.5 H110 out of 4 and 6 in revolvers. The deer were complete pass through, broadside and quartering angles, as was one elk. The bullet recovered from the elk weighed 238 gr. It passed through the left front shoulder, slight quartering on angle, took out top of the heart and lungs and was found just inside the hide on the right rib cage. Range was 87 yds., slight downhill. Sorry, no pics.

The bullet will act like a cast bullet for the smaller game. If your deer are in the 100-200# range you may opt for the 240s or 265 Hornady. Just my limited experience with the bullet.
