Sighted in with factory irons then mounted with "spare" Bushnell Elite 3200 2X6. Warne Quick Detachable rings make it very versatile.

Sweet rig! I have a 22/45, but it is a MkII. Being able to use your irons with a base attached makes a nice improvement.

Rod, too.

Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.

Cant go wrong with a Ruger .22. A lot cheaper to shoot than the .454. I have the Mark III and it works great.

Those are great little guns. Cant beat them for the price.

s4s4u: Great observation; you are 100% on target!

The iron sights are perfectly visible without the factory Weaver-style scope base interfering at all.

Very nice Gregg! I have the Mk III Hunter and love it. I have not tried it with a scope yet though.

I took a few birds with my Mk III last fall. I took half the birds and my son is holding one of mine and his moms birds (she took the pic) she shot with a Ruger 10/22. After a long hike looking for grouse with no luck, we found some along the road on the way home. They are great guns and very accurate!

Very nice Gregg. With that setup you get the best of both worlds.

Gregg, you got me wondering how my MK III would do with a scope so I mounted a T/C 2.5-7 on it and hit the range. I was already impressed by its accuracy with open sights. The scope really showed me what it can do. I doubt I ever would have mounted a scope on it if I had not read your post.

I had a 5.5" 22/45 with a 2.5X scope on it and was able to get 1" -1 1/4" groups at 50 yards with budget ammo. However the 6 7/8 GTM MkIII I had would do much better even with the budget ammo. It GTM (had a 2X nikon on it)would do 3/4" groups at 50--I also tried std velocity target ammo and it did not do much better. RWS was by far the best I shot.

The one thing I found in these guns is they shoot the budget ammo almost as well as the high $$ stuff

My Model 17 S&W does much better with the Target Eley than with the Budget ammo (big delta)like fom 2" to 1/2" groups

If it jams force it! If it breaks it needed replacing anyway.

One other note on the MkIII and I will shut-up the MKIII is equiped with the wonderful (lawyer designed) loaded chamber indicator-- This is a nice dodad but it is a dirt/powder magnet I wound up pulling the pin out of mine and removing the assembly--made for much better operation after 1000+rounds After 500 rounds of so mine would begin to get sticky around 700 would become a feed issue.

Some may say I never shoot mine that much--but with two young boys and a array of steel dinger targets --they can go through 3 bulk boxes of ammo in a day or so when we are at the camp.

Once this was removed I never had another issue

Mine was having the same jamming issue about every 500 rounds. After reading your post, I pulled the indicator out last night and had no problems with it today.

You just gotta love a Ruger MK Series .22 LR Handgun.

I have an old Stainless-Steel MKII 5 1/2" Bull Barrel that I couldn't begin to count how many rounds have been fired from it. It is still as amazingly accurate as it was when I bought it used. Mine is set up with the Weaver Base mounted backwards with the open sights removed. Mounting it backwards the rear of the base covers the dovetail vacated by the removal of the rear sight. I use either a 30mm UltraDot Red Dot Sight or a 2x Swift Handgun Scope depending on my use (generally the 30mm UltraDot gets used for indoor target competition at our local club and the 2x Swift gets used for Hunting).

I also have a Ruger MKIII 22/45 4" Bull Barrel that is not quite as accurate but is a super holster gun. This one has a Fiber Optic Front Sight with the Ruger Adjustable Square Notch Rear Sight. It also has a Weaver Base with a UltraDot L/T that I use on it at times.

Both of these had had some work done to them in the form of Clark Custom Guns Steel Ruger Triggers, Volquartsen Target Sears, and the factory Hammer Polished. I have also added blast shields to both to help keep the trigger mechanism free of junk.

In the case of my MKIII 22/45 I never even shot it before I had my gunsmith modify the grip frame to accept 1911 Grip Screw Bushings and Hogue Rubber Finger Groove 1911 Grips (this was way before Ruger came out with the Replaceable Panel versions).

I have also had both of my bolts milled to set the headspace to the proper dimension. This not only helped eliminate fliers but also tightened up the groups. With the floating bolt on a semi auto rimfire the headspace is set via the proper depth of the recess in the frame in which the head of the cartridge sites in in the front of the bolt. Specs call for .043" and mine were .050" from the factory.

Over on Rimfire Central there is a guy that makes and sells a replacement filler piece to take the place of the Loaded Chamber Indicator. He offers them in both blued and stainless. While all I have seen is photos of these they do look like they fit good and look nice. My LCI hasn't caused any issues as yet but I will more than likely replace mine with one of these filler pieces some day.

I made it to the gun range yesterday; it was a scheduled trap shoot, so I shot 5 rounds of trap singles, 25 per round. My two best rounds out of 25 were 22 and 23, which is about right for me, not great but not too bad. (I won't tell you my 2 worst lol lol.)

After that I slipped over to the other part of the range and shot some .22's. One was my Ruger 22/45 with the Bushnell Elite 3200 2X6 set at 6X.

Typical groups at 25 yards were right at an inch, with five different types of .22 ammo. The "best" groups were from Eley standard velocity hollow points (not match.)

I believe the gun will shoot better than that, as I was a bit shaky, maybe due in part to the 125 rounds of 12 gauge I fired.

I just bought an old Ruger pistol at a gun show. It's a pre '73 I think, and is madfe before they started calling them a Mark. Has no safety warnings and is made a little heavier. It's not the red seal and has the SR in the seal, so it's not the oldest version, but probably made in the 60's. Looks real good, and I hope it shoot the same.
