The Deltapoint arrived yesterday from Leupold. I asked for the 3.5 minute dot version; versus the 7.5 minute version which is the Delta (triangle so to speak) for the aiming point. http://www.leupold.com/tactical/products/scopes/deltapoint-reflex-sights/My first impressions: it is much heavier than the JPoint, and the quality is much better than the JPoint, as far as overall finish and feel and looks. And the Leupold cover is rubber and fits nice and snug, whereas the JPoint cover is plastic and fits very loosely and can be easily lost (which I have already done once.) I will be working on my review of it and post it when it is ready.

Gregg,
Definitely look forward to your review!
Do you think the weaver-style supplied mount for the Leupold gives it the perceived weight difference? After reading your initial impressions, I went back and reviewed specs of both (which I had done prior to my purchase). The manufacturer sites list the DeltaPoint at 0.6 oz (18 grams) and the J-Point at 0.5 oz (14 grams).

Give it a 'good' workout, Gregg. I had a similar product by another manufacturer 'give up the ghost'(lost windage/elevation adjustment)after less than 200rds.
It's not the gun, but the man behind it.

After reading your initial impressions, I went back and reviewed specs of both (which I had done prior to my purchase). The manufacturer sites list the DeltaPoint at 0.6 oz (18 grams) and the J-Point at 0.5 oz (14 grams). Good point, SChunter. I pulled the mount off the Deltapoint and put the Deltapoint on my RCBS powder scale. It weighed 246 grains, and the JPoint without mount weighed 176 grains; 70 grains difference. The Deltapoint mount, with mounting screws, weighed 576 grains. The JPoint mount, with screws (a SIMILAR CROSS SLOT mount designed for the JPoint), weighed 281 grains. Deltapoint w/mount = 822 grains; JPoint w/mount = 457 grains. SOOO... with similar mounts, the Deltapoint is 365 grains heavier. One drawback of more weight is greater momentum, (mass at rest, snapped into motion by recoil ie. an object at rest tends to stay at rest) which is what tears scopes apart under heavy recoil, and even causes scope tubes to flex, when viewed with high speed cameras... The Leupold housing is magnesium, which gives it great strength. The LED and electronics are really the weak point in any of these red dot sights. MHO

Thanks Gregg! I figured the difference was mostly attributed to the mounting system. Running it on one of my FA 83's, I ditched the cross-slot in favor of the FA Mount.
FYI - even though Freedom's instructions say that the shim is NOT needed with the Delta Point, I found that it was on my 4 3/4" gun.

I have had to use the shims on almost every one of the installations I have done on revolvers, with the JPoints and my Optima.

Gregg,
Looking forward. And from first hand "experience", go easy on those Delta setscrews. A little dab will do ya ;^) If you can find the correct size for a magnatip style screwdriver, I would do that and ditch the supplied wrench.

Sounds like real good advice, Craig. Those screws are tiny.
Another plus for the Deltapoint: after you get the sight-in setting screws where you want them, you gently tighten the locking screws to lock it all in.

Thanks, guys, I am really wanting to get going on it, but I am waiting on some custom grips for my FA .454; the gun I want to use for the write-up.
You have my word I will get it going as soon as I get those grips!

Waiting patiently for a hunters review of this sight. Most everything else review wise out there, is based on ar platforms and how well the deltapoint will fare during the zombie invasion.

I'm with Boot. Zombie invasion is low on my performance priority list.

Boot and NW,
I put a DeltaPoint on my 4 3/4" 500WE last fall. Quick pointing, low profile, and enables me to shoot minute of whitetail/hog out to 100. Shot one poor Carolina nanny and dinged a big hog with it last season.
I have the 3.5MOA dot model on mine, using the FA-supplied mount that is used for both the J-Point and the DeltaPoint.
It'd work for the zombies too, but I have other guns for that

Dur, do you know who makes a mount for a ruger blackhawk for the delta point. I think I may put one one the 45 bisley and one on the 44mag

FA-supplied mount that is used for both the J-Point and the DeltaPoint. So the JPoint and the Leupold use the same base? If so, the Optima base should work as well.
Rod, too.

Huh? The Trijicon and the Zeiss Z-point both have the option of a weaver or picatinny base. Actually the Z-point doesn't have a removable base so you have to order it for weaver or picatinny. Leupold has the cross-slot mount that, I believe, is universal.

I have shot it a few times to get it on paper at 25 but I ran out of ammo before I could give it a good workout. I also had to shim it a little to get it to zero. It was shooting too high out of the box.

I don't think you'll find much difference, if any, between the major brands - Trijicon, Aimpoint, EOTech, Leupold etc - they will take whatever you can handle including the 50BMG. Seems they all turn out a lemon every now & then but they all stand behind their products in case you happen to be that unlucky soul.

No standard mounting on weaver rails. Really? The JPoint also uses the same base. And several others have their own version of weaver mount as well.
Rod, too.

Here's the Trijicon RMR. Gary, Wow! That is a real clean looking installation; doesn't surprise me the mount is from Freedom Arms. Mr. Bob Baker (Freedom Arms) did the same thing for the JPoint a few years back; offered an exceptionally clean base to go on the FA 83 for the JPoint; no longer available though.

KRal,
I bought two for my 83s earlier this year.
The FA website still advertises it.

No KRal I don't; possibly lack of demand; low sales?
Just in case, call FA; they may have a few set aside...
If you have success, please let us know here.

It's an Ultradot L/T with a 2 moa dot. I haven't even tightened it down yet, but just might take it for a spin on Saturday and at least get it sighted in. More details to follow......
