We have seen threads of favorite guns, calibers, revolvers, etc. I will pose one to you. You are hunting with a revolver --- the revolver of your choice. Your quarry (a deer sized animal) is around 100 yds away (75-110). You can get a solid rest (from your stand, your vehicle, against a tree, etc.). How would you like for him to stand -- broadside or ?????? What is your favorite shot?
I will expect that most will select broadside --- opportunity for behind the shoulder or the shoulder. However, that is not my choice. I will share mine with you after I have heard from you.

It's more important where you hit 'em, than what you hit 'em with.

I'll take broadside & bullet placement depends on the bullet. If I'm using an expanding bullet, chest shot. Hardcast, shoulder shot. By the way, I was shooting my 480 SRH!

I prefer quartering away with the leg facing me forward so I have a clear shot through the vitals and can break down the off shoulder. My 7-30 Contender or 454 Revolver.

Broadside or quartering to. I'll be using a big enough bullet to poke a hole all the way through, I don't need quartering away and that visible shoulder is easier to line up on than the off-side front leg.

Broadside shoulder shots tear up too much sausage, Lord I know. I like them lookin' right at me or quartering away, but they seldom provide the perfect angle. If presented with nothing but a broadside shot, within 100 yards or so, I would target the base of the neck. They go down hard when you stick it in there, and you don't lose any vennie ;-)
Rod, too.

Fun Topic, wtroper!
I will take 'em anyway I can, and make the best of it, if everything else is good (range, bullet and load, sight picture as well as sight type, good rest, etc.
If I had my druthers, give me broadside.

What Gary said. Every one of my Africa shots were quartering one way or the other. The .480 hard cast went through 4' of zebra and the 30-30 Leverevolion entered a flank and stopped at the brisket on a Warthog.

I'll go broadside as first preference, with either quartering angle next...

Broadside is my first and favorite. Other than that its gonna be quartering away. Anything else and I will hold my shot.

I started this topic & stated that I will share my preference later. Thanks for your replies & I suppose it is time to share mine.
Mine is standing square looking at me --- direct frontal view. I aim for the middle of the neck. If I hit where I want --- DRT. If I miss, no harm -- no foul. I have missed one with that presentation --- a blackbuck at 110 yds. Later I was lucky enough to get another chance at the same animal at only 97 yds. The second shot was perfect. He had an 1 1/2" place on the left side of his neck with the hair burned off --- my first shot. That was my first attempt at taking one in that position. Since then it has become the position that I look for.
It's more important where you hit 'em, than what you hit 'em with.

I'm not dogging you, but I find it a little odd that due to burning a spot on the side of the blackbucks neck with the first shot that the angle you described would be your preferred angle. Had you not caught up with it for a second opportunity might it have suffered? Seems like a low percentage angle to me. Just my opinion.
I like broadside or quartering away, to answer the question.

I like broadside or quartering away, to answer the question. I can understand your reasoning BT, but I like them looking right at me as well. I have seen many deer run forever with a broadside shot that was just a wee bit high. If you hit them high on a frontal they just go down harder. The target kill zone is the same 8" circle as a broadside shot, with less room for windage error but more room for elevation error and elevation errors are the cause of more misses and bad hits than windage errors in my experience. A bad shot is a bad shot, regardless of where one is aiming. Remember, the sample distance was around 100 yards and if a person can't hit a buck square in the chest @ 100 yards, they need to get to work ;-)
Rod, too.

The frontal shot can be very deadly with correct bullets, a jacketed hollow point might hate this view. I've used it several times with great success. If I were pinned down to one angle I'd opt for somewhat broadside, I just want my slugs to be lined up with vitals on the backside, one of Elmer or Veral's finest will take care of the rest. Twice I've shot through deer length ways, once facing me, the other time the deer was facing straight away & watching a coyote, the Keith slug whacked it in the right ham & exited the left front shoulder, good bullets will do that.

I shot a doe at 115yards with my 257 Rob AI shooting a 115 NBT at 2750. Massive damage, it literally took that doe off its feet.

I would have to say stand there until I put one in him!
On the other side of the coin, a quartering away or broadside. I do have a itch to make a shoulder shot.

As I expected, most prefer some type of broadside presentation. I also will not pass that one. Originally stated were: the revolver of your choice, a rest, and about 100 yds.
The frontal shot on a blackbuck would not be my first choice. They are small animals. Their necks are not very wide. But they are also very wary & prefer open areas. Thus, getting a 100 yd shot (a revolver shot) at a good one is unusual. This one was "brain dead" that day & provided two opportunities at about 100 yds but was always standing looking at me --- the frontal shot was the only alternative. The first shot grazed his neck only burning the hair. The second, about 4 hours later, was in the center of his neck about 1" lower than the grazed place.
The revolver was my favorite (and most accurate) FA 41 mag loaded with 210 XTPs. With it I practice shooting small (2") diamond shaped metal targets @ 100 yds. This blackbuck was the first game animal that I had taken in that position. Since then I am comfortable with that presentation, if I have a steady rest, the range is reasonable and I am confident in the accuracy of my revolver and load.
It's more important where you hit 'em, than what you hit 'em with.

If its with my new 510 GNR thats coming, it would be facing me, or broadside - That 350 grain bullet will break its shoulder sure enough. But as mentioned by s4s4u, I do like the base of the neck as well, they crumple right there. I hate tracking!

while the facing on shot is certainly a good option the one draw back i see to it is that a deer facing you is more likely to bust you. Although with the set up as described with rest and all, if you were already set up there wouldn't be much movement on the shooters part.

Dick Yes indeed! The only shot I had on my black bear last year was a Texas heart shot and I had absolute confidence in the fact that my bullet would have no trouble traversing the whole animal and getting to the vitals. My bullet exited by the right shoulder. I like quartering away shot, but again, with confindence in my load/bullet selection, I am comfortable with pretty much any angle presented. I do like breaking shoulders, though.

Dick I concur. A good bullet will allow a shot at any angle required and is not limited in the penetration department when fired from a big bore revolver
