S4s4u, what type of tube sight is that? And where'd you get the holster?

That tube is a 10 year old Tasco PDP (no longer made), been on everything from a T/C 45/70 to a SRH 480R, my Bisley 45LC, and now my GP100, tough as nails. I also have a 4x scope that I use for load testing and it returns to zero with Leupold Rifleman aluminum rings, quick detach with an allen wrench. Each time I have replaced the reflex sight after using the scope it has come back very close to zero.

The holster is made by Hunter, I cut the top slit for the topstrap and scope base.

Thanks for the info. I may save my pennies, and try the QR rings for my 2-6 scope, and a picatinny mounted fastfire, and maybe eventually an ultradot as well.

I would suggest that you select one of the above, and then perfect the technique. If I were only allowed one option, it would be the UltraDot.

Forgive my lack of knowledge, and in no way am I trying to be argumentative, but is the technique that much different for the different sights? I have never had a red dot before. Im not quite sure what to expect. My most important reason for looking into them, is early morn, late eve hunting. If i had MY way, I'd have a a good 1-4x variable scope, with quality glass, AND illuminated crosshair. However, my search has not met with success. If you reccomend the ultradot over both other options, can you explain why, and give an opinion on its low light performance vs the reflex sight like the optima or the fastfire? Thanks in advance.

I think any red dot-type sight offers an advantage over a scope in low-light. Reflexive or tube type is something you need to figure out as some prefer one over the other. For me, the durability of the tube type is a big consideration as I am not very kind to my equipment. Too bad you are not nearby, as I would let you try both out (I recently stuck an Ultradot PAN-A-V on my BFR in .500 JRH).

There is no free lunch. A tube sight is quicker to target for me, so if I have only one option it would be the UltraDot. I love the reflex sight on my Bisley for the early hours on stand, and its compact size, but it does take some getting used to. When you add magnification to the equation it is a whole 'nuther story; parralax, eye relief, light consumption. I have a few guns so I am able to adjust, but if I could only have one....

Its all about compromise.

If you do an Ultra get the one with 4 dot sizes in it.

The Match Dot, I have 3 of them and never had a problem. Its nice to reduce your dot size when your shooting small targets at extended distances. Or crank up your dot size for woods walking. For $200. you won't find anything close.

Ok. I finally made up my mind. I will be mounting a fastfire iii to my ruger. Darrell H was kind enough to let me test drive several different red dots. It was my first bout with red dots, and all I can say is wow!! What was I doin with a big giant scope on my revolver?! The red dots are pretty dang sweet!! I really like the size and weight of the fastfire. Thanks to all who offered advice, and a big thanks, to DarrellH, a super nice guy, with some really nice shootin irons.

I shot my new Ultradot L/T on my .500 JRH BFR today, and I am impressed with the little sight! Might want to consider one of these as well!

Boot, I think that you made a good choice. I enjoyed meeting and shooting with you yesterday as well.

Whitworth, it looks like that Ultradot L/T is a viable option as well. I like the way that you have the BFR set-up. What distance was that target shot at? Nice group! Are you gonna leave the Ultradot L/T on there for awhile or was this just for testing purposes?

I'm taking the scope off my BFR 45-70 and going with the Fast fire as well. I think the dot sights, which ever flavor you go with are all well made these days and keep coming down in cost. Whit, that was a nice tight group. What is the cost of the Ultra dot LT?

Hey Darrell! Yeah, that was shot at 50 yards yesterday by a buddy of mine. I was concentrating on the open sighted revolvers I had with me while he played with the BFR. Yeah, I am going to torture test it for sure. I just wish the BFR base wasn't so big and bulky. Might have to have Rod cut one down for me.

I think $269.00 shipped. It's cool in tha it has a photocell, and adjusts its brightness according to outside light. Oh, and the dot is 2 moa.

Ya I like the smaller dots as well. One of the features of my Fast Fire II's that I liked was the auto brightness.

Whit I agree the BFR base is huge. I was thinking the same thing about cutting it down.

With my limited use I haven't experienced any trouble finding it.

I had been a steadfast scope guy on my revolvers but after playing with a Millet and Bushnell I think I'm converted. I seem to take to the tube type a little better than the reflex style so I'll probably invest in some Ultradots eventually.

The FFII that I pun on my Dan Wesson 357 mag came apart in less than a box of factory ammo. Screws stripped, glass loose. Lemon? Got my money back and put on a 2X Leo.

Seasons, I shoot three gun matches with a tricked out Ak that has a fast fire II on it. I routinely beat out guys with AR's that have Eotechs and aimpoints on them. The dit is very quick to find. I had a bushenell holosight on my Raging bull 480 for several years and never missed what I was hunting for with it. They are quick to find the dot. Like anything practice is important.
