Due to website technicalities, Mr. Gary has given me permission to post my 2012 Scouting Video Part One in this fashion.I have been scouting my hunting areas and videotaping; all of this footage I personally filmed in September 2012. Filming these amazing animals is fun and very challenging; but not quite like dropping the hammer on my revolver or single-shot... One minute and 18 seconds of a western hunter's adrenalin-pumping dreams... youtube

Gregg, that first bull, I don't know how you didn't rope it tie it to a tree and wait for opening day. Lol, I bet you wish it was opening day and you had your custom Dixie firearm in your hand and not the camera. Although, the anticipation and preps of the hunt will be worth it. Great video.

Wow - some nice bulls and bucks! That 7x7 is a beast.
Let's see, 2nd Rifle season (handgun) is OTC tags, right? Think you can keep them out of harms way until then?

If that don't light your fire your woods wet! I can see me with Bubba Doom sending a 335gr through the ribs on several critters. reflex264

All of this filming was done in the front range (within approx. 50 miles of Denver) which are all draw Units; no OTC tags for these areas UNLESS there are some tags left over after the first drawing and then after the second drawing. One can always hope!

I also want to thank all of you others for your positive comments! I am very happy I could provide some interesting video footage of a few Western Big Game animals in the settings where I hunt them.
Sincerely,
Gregg

This week has been a little bit rougher; more work and tougher terrain. I was however able to scout out three more (different) elk herds; one with a marginal 6X6 herd bull; another with a MONSTER perfect 6X6 with a kicker on his left G-4 of about four inches long; and the third an average, slightly skewed, but WIDE 6X6.
And lest any of you feel that I am making this sound too easy, I was NOT able to get video footage of any of these new three EXCEPT for the last one: the WIDE average yet non-symetrical 6X6.
One major point (no pun) in the B&C and P&Y and SCI scoring methods regards the mass and length of the G-1 through the G-6-7 points. In the herds that I hunt, the genetics seem to have a weakness in the logrollers from the G-3's forward; and case in point: on the 7X7 on my video, the G-6's and G-7's are very weak.
You will note that I am saying it the way I experience it on a day to day basis; (that is what these forums are for, after all; our experience) and am NOT (do you get it: NOT!!!) in any way criticizing any of these fine animals in a real sense; but rather just more from a scoring perspective for the record.
(Which is NOT all that important to me, rather I LOVE the HUNT for a good male representative of the species as to how challenging it is; how I made the stalk; how I made the shot, how good the shot was, etc)
I will be more than happy to drop the hammer of my .475 Linebaugh on ANY of these bad boys in my video!
And to be brutally honest, that big perfect 6X6 with the kicker would be my first choice, even though he would not score as well as that beastly 7X7.
For What it is Worth!
PS: Again, FWIW, my scouting involves hard work behind the scenes including but not limited to: horses, atv's, and good old legwork; even with (my) marginal legs. But it is all worthwhile in the long run...

Congrats on finding some new bulls...hope you can capture them on film!
Question for you - is this scouting primarily for a tag you've drawn, or for clients of yours that have drawn and will be coming in to hunt with Little Gun Outfitters?

Actually, both. I am hunting or guiding three different units this year. These herds are not all that close to each other; several miles apart at the least. And there is a lot of real estate in between where no game was found.

I am at the DEN airport! Are you on your way to pick me up?
The only big game I hunt is midwest whitetails, boar and black bear. I should have gotten out there to hunt b4 I got this old.
Good luck dropping the hammer on these bulls and bucks this year!

Howdy and welcome to HHM, Sigforall!
If the first season was open now, I wish I WAS on my way to DIA to pick you up and take you hunting. That is one of the things in life that I do truly enjoy: guiding hunters; esp. handgun hunters. It's the next best thing to hunting myself. Although in some ways, I prefer guiding over hunting in some situations. I guess maybe it is a "share" thing. I want others to experience the thrill.
PS: How old are you? I can put together a pretty easy hunt if you have the time.

I hear ya there Gregg, When I was in Colorado this summer, it was a feat to see any elk, especially when the grazing allotments opened up and cattle moved in. Mule deer on the other hand were everywhere! lol. I am sure they are all a little spookier now that archery season is going.
are you hunting on private or public land?
P.S. That 6x6 with the sticker does sound good! I am a sucker for bucks and bulls with mass and trash!

Gregg, I had a laugh moment up at the ranch I will be hunting in a few weeks. I jumped a really dumb bull. And, he had really strange horns. About 8 inches a side, and each top had 2 or 3 points in what looked liked a Red deer (stag) crown. I have seen a lot of elk in my years of hunting the Rockies, and this guy was the goofiest I have ever seen. I jumped a small cow a little later near the same spot, so maybe these two juveniles were headed out for a pop, movie and a little young love
