I sent MGM a barrel blank. Blank was a Blackstar Accumax 1 cut rifled stainless steel tight bore ~30" in length. Barrel came from Blackstar already octagon contoured. I already sent MGM the remaining stub back to have them build a Contender barrel in 300 Blackout.
Gotta find time to shoot it in the near future

Cha-Ching! If you can't find time to shoot that beauty just send it on down to 'Bama and I'll go beyond the call of duty and reluctantly shoot it for you. Hate to...but I will.(G) Congrats!

It takes 43 muscles to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger squeeze.

That is perty. Gonna be a handful for sure without a brake. Have fun ;-)
Rod, too.

Brakes are for Sissies! And I may very well turn out to be a Sissy after shooting this one...
I've discovered in the past, that this case size is about the upper limit of my recoil tolerance, though it was a 7mm based round on the same case.
I may very well end up putting a brake on it, but am gonna resist as long as I can.
I've been able to shoot 30-06 JDJ, 30-06 AI, 30-280 AI, 7 RM, 375 JDJ, 308 Win, 280 AI, all with no brake and no issues, so I hoping this one will be the same. Some of those were on lighter contoured barrels. This one has a bit more meat to it, and will help with minimizing recoil.
I've got 8 rounds loaded up and ready to start breaking in the barrel.

I'm probably as big a recoil junkie as anyone on here including whit but there comes a point when it's not about tough but smart. I've built and shot a few 300 win mag barrels and some are no problem without a brake others would tear you up in a hurry. The 458 Win and Lott barrels I built would destroy you without a brake. Bottom line is if you value your wrist there comes a point when getting a brake is just the smart thing to do.

i agree....that is a beautiful setup but........ there comes a point when getting a brake is just the smart thing to do. the pach rubber grip MAY make enough difference for you, but when i shot only 10 180gr factory rounds thru the 16.5" 300 win mag(factory heavy rifle barrel cut down), it turned my thumb/palm area black n blue(bruised). it put me totally out of commission from shooting for a couple weeks. it had a factory walnut grip at the time. maybe you will be better off....but.... hey....it's your hand. if you ever loose usage of it....you may learn to appreciate it. after a brake was added, it was a tame pussy cat.

I got going on the brake and forgot to tell you that is a beautiful set up. With the 300WM and 338WM cases being so similiar where do you expect performance to fall compared to a standard 300?

Whew! You guys are taking my comment about brakes being for sissies way to serious!
If I deem it necessary to put a brake on this thing, I certainly will.
I shot it once today as I didn't have time to do any real shooting. I was quite surprised at the recoil, or rather the lack of recoil. Load was 71.3 gr H4831sc pushing a Berger 175 VLD.
This barrel is pretty meaty. Muzzle measures 0.850" across the flats, so the diameter is a bit more than that. Combined with the 16.5" length, it's rather hefty.
My 30-06 JDJ std taper bbl and my 7RM heavy taper bbl had more recoil than this 30-338 WM barrel does.
I really don't know how it will compare to the 300WM. I've only seen limited velocity figures quoted online, so I am not sure how it'll compare. I would expect my 30-338 to be pretty close to it. Rifle data shows it to be virtually the same as the 300 WM in riffle barrels. I also think the 30-338 case to have higher load densities vs the 300 WM.
Hope to get to the range very soon.
Regards Rog

best of my memory....2600fps with a 180gr sierra flat base pro hunter bullet in the 16.5" 300 win mag, n it did not like to be pushed to hard in the encore. look forward to see how that thing does for you.

We are just having some fun. Whit jokes that 44 Mags are for sissies and tries to stir us up occasionally. I guess I am a REAL sissy--my 44 rides with me everywhere I go, and my true thumper T/Cs and my XP wear brakes on the end. Just bought a Contender Super 14 SS barrel...guess if I put a brake on it I'll have to wear pink camo next year....(G)

Guess that's what I get for not keeping with all the postings here on HGH.
I might have to agree with Whit :))
Though, personally, I never liked the recoil of the Ruger SBH. I personally prefer recoil to come back into my hand ala double action revolver or T/C style. Easier and better for me to control recoil.
I am hoping to get to the range soon. Gonna put the 30-338 WM thru its paces and see how it runs.
