I recently bought a Ruger Super Redhawk 44Mag.

Let me just say WOW!! What a gun. A little more snap than my Baikal IZH 35M 22 target pistol. I bought it to hunt with. The places I hunt rarely afford me a shoot over 75 yards. The Ruger SRH 44mag seemed like a good choice from what I've read. Anyhow I’ve shot about 70 rounds thought it in three days. This has leaded me to the decision that I need new grips. My Baikal has hardwood grips that I’ve customized with wood putty to fit my hand. I think this method would be too rough on my hand and wouldn’t hold up well it the weather. Hogue makes a formed rubber grip. Has anybody used them? I was curious how they stay in place. I saw a picture and it didn’t have a screw thought it like the stock grip. If anyone has any other suggestion I would like to hear them.

Has anybody used the SRH 44mag for hunting? I plan on using it as my main white tail hunting weapon in upstate NY. I might also try wild boar hunting in VT. As I have said where I hunt most of my shoots are less than 100 yards. Barnes has a completely copper bullet called the XBT. If you read all their hype it sounds like a great round. Has anybody tried it? At about $1 each they are kind of pricey. I would like to here some pros and cons before I shell out that kind of cash. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

I have the same gun and use the Hogue grip. It has a screw in the bottom of it that holds it on. I have had no problems with the grip and its very comfortable. I took my first deer this past fall with my .44. I used 300gr JSP Corbon ammo. I had the gun sighted in with this ammo for a bear hunt so I used the same thing for deer. He only went 40-50 yards after a double lung shot. I don't reload yet and in my opion Corbon makes some good ammo.

i like 240gr xtps with 21gr of 2400, or 24gr of H110. if ya have doubt on the 240gr for hogs, a 300gr might be worth a try.

i loaded up 50rnds of 265gr specialty pistol cast boolits for my redhawk n contender a few days ago. great lookin cast boolit with a gas check. will have to see how impressive it shoots n i bet it'd knock a hog silly.

20 bucks/hundred should buy a bullet to kill anything imo. no way i'd give $1 each for ANY bullet.

i have a redhawk 44 mag. and use the hogue grips and have had no trouble and like kyle i like the 240 xtps.

I have a SBH in .44. I use factory ammo from Winchester in the white box(240 gr. JSP). I'm getting good groups. I've shot a few guns with hogue grips & liked them all.

I use the 320gr Cast Performance over 21gr of w296

I have a SRH in 44. The only thing I have taken with it so far is a fierce woodchuck on a full charge at 18 yards!! I droped him in his tracks with a Remington 240gr SJHP.


I would look at the Hornady XTP. Seems like the last I bought was $15 for 100 of the 240gr pills. The XTP is a great bullet.

I would try Badger Custom Grips. He has grips listed for the GP 100, I do belive thats close to the same grip as the SRH. Give Jim a call and see. I like the looks of the finger groove grips. Here is the link.

I too have a SRH in 44 mag. I tried the Hogue grips and didn't especialyy care for them. Probably gonna sell them. I went back to the factory grips and they work fine for me I guess. I mostly shoot 240 gr XTPs in mine and they perform very nice on WT deer. I've also loaded the SSK 320 grain and the SP 310 grain. These both work very well on paper. I like these bullets because you can seat them differently to allow more powder capacity. 2 crimp grooves, I like that. The only powder I currently use 296, though I have tried AA #9 with great results. I am by no means cheap, but I think a $1 a bullet is a little ridiculous in a revolver. They would have to perform alot better than what I currently use to justify that cost. Just my input.

I emailed Jim a few times last week with my ideas about a grip. Finally I called him and ordered a blank. He was extremely helpful. He is sending me a bland pre cut to fit my gun and I will be able to custom fit it to my hands. Should be a fun rainy day (week well ok month) project. Thanks for the tip.
