Ok, I have a problem & I don't. Since my wonderful wife (& cute)bought me my .44 Rem Mag Ruger Super Blackhawk Bisley Hunter for my 50th B-day I have jumped into reloading. I found this site, and have soaked up all sorts of info from you guys. I have looked @ books, talked to "Old Timers" & I'm kinda stuck. I ran my loads up to 10.9 magnum levels(IE.300 Gr. XTP on top of 26 grains of H110). I have backed it off to 22 grains of H110 300 grain XTP. This load is a wonder in my revolver! I git' 2-3 MOA, with a freakish 1 MOA once in a while. I have molds to cast 255 & 250 w/GC, but have no desire for casting right now. for the time being I see no need to fix what is not broke. Am I off?

If it shoots, go with it. There's a lot of winter after hunting season to try different things.

You are thinking correctly. I like the heavy cast too, but the xtp is a killer.

I shoot the 300gr xtp mag over 40.5gr H110 out of my 460, but everything else is switched over to "heavy for caliber" hard cast bullets from Cast Performance. I just can't bring myself to switch the 460 over to cast because it is picking off milk jugs at ridiculous ranges with the above mentioned load. Like ya said, I'f it aint broke, don't fix it.
When I started reloading, the guys on here guided me towards H110, and I love it. Its very stable, performs best at / near full house loads, and WAS available pretty easily around here. I am just now starting to use tightgroup in my 45 Colt and 500JRH, and although considerably slower, it seems to do the job very nicely! Think I'll save the H110 for the 460 loads only, and use tightgroup in everything else.
Not sure what my post has to do with your topic, but I just HAD to chime in! :-)

Nope, I went threw the same exact thing...
I have 46 10.9 Mag loads loaded up with 23gr H110.
I have now gotten into casting and having a blast. I am even casting hollow points now as well. LOL
It's just addicting.

I just didn't have to work at getting things working right. I have friends that seem to stuggle at getting the right loads, and I just happened into good loads in both .44 mag, & .357 for my model 28. I guess I feel a little guilty;)

If it shoots good, have confidence and stick with it. Confidence in your shooting ability matters WAY more than jacketed vs cast or 150 fps! While its all fun to talk about and play with and there are some slight advantages here and there it really just take a decent .429 bullet at >700 fps and you have dead deer.

Ya know I think your right about the confidence side of things. My son videoed me shooting my SBBH offhand @ 100 yards at a milk jug filled with water. I had an audience & took bets that I could hit the jug with the first shot. Only my son thought I could hit it on the first shot. Hit it with first 2 shots out of the cylinder. I'll try to figure out how to post that video.

Sir you are ready to go in my opinion. I'm not sure what your velocity is but I guess its >1250 fps should kill a deer like a hammer. It is obvious that you are proficient with the Ruger.
BTW I am a ridiculous tinkerer also, but the first time I shot my 45 colt with 13gr of HS6 I saw no need to tinker. I feel like I can kill anything in North America (well it can). It's accurate and recoils little. There are much more powerful loads but "can I shoot them as well?".

Hodgdon lists 19.0 grains of H110 as the max load for 300 grain bullets. And you load 26.0 grains?
Personally, I use 20.0 grains of H110 with 300 grain XTP's out of my SRH.

I checked my notes, and I was wrong. The load I used with 26 grains of H110 was a 240 gr. Magtech and Sarline .44 spc. brass. The bullet was seated to the second cannelure. Sorry, I didn't mean to mislead anyone.

26 grains of H110 was a 240 That makes more sense. Same charge I use with the 45 Colt, but with a 250.
Rod, too.
Short cuts often lead to long recoveries.
