Ok I am looking at the SBH and was going to get it after moving in 2 weeks as long as money allowed. I know everyone pretty much agrees the .44 mag is the way to go for hunting.

I was talking to my neighbor yesterday about hunting (never knew he was into guns) deer and he said he had tried it a few times with no success. Asked what I used and told him SG or Bow and was going to try a HG next year. He asked what HG I had and said I don't have one yet and that I just started looking at them. He said he had one I may be interested in.

Here's what he has, A Ruger GP 100 with a Weigand scope mount and it's topped with a Ultra Dot Match Dot scope and has a couple boxes of ammo. He says the gun has less than a box of ammo run through it. He said he would take $500.00 for everything or trade me for my never used CZ 912. What do you think? I like the idea of the .44 mag, but is this to good of a deal to pass on? I'm in no hurry since I won't be using it this year anyways. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't passing up one of those I would have jumped all over it deals. Thanks all.

The GP 100 is a great gun for target shooting and personal protection. It's not capable of handling heavy handloads that the same caliber SBH can handle. The 44 mag IMO is a better way to start. You can load it down and get familiar with it then you can handload it up to the level of power capable of taking any game in the lower 48 and most of what is in Alaska comfortably. It sounds like money is a bit of an issue. If that is the case you would be better served starting with the 44. It will do just about any and everything you could think of. Sell the CZ912 purchase a SBH in 44 send it off for a trigger job and a scope base and put an ultra dot or some other red dot scope on it and enjoy a gun that will last 5 lifetimes if taken care of.

The 357 Magnum will do fine within reasonable distances, and the GP100 is a fine platform for the cartridge. I load 16 grains of H110 behind a 158 JHP @ 1,500 fps. To say this bullet "worked" would be an understatement. You need to pick your shots carefully, but it will giterdun. You better have your ears on tho.

PS, $500 is a decent price, with the UltraDot.

Rod, too.

I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a to good to pass up deal. Since it's not a steal or anything maybe I'll hold off for the SBHH. Thanks folks.

I'm just going to hold out for a .44mag. I really like the SBHH, and I've been checking out some TC's as well.
