My wife shot this fine 6x6 bull on our property in south colorado Sunday evening. (I put it in this section because a 270wsm rifle was used, but I don't care.) When I spotted them, they were 186 yards away through the rangefinder. I saw the antlers over the crest of the hill, and we both squatted down. I told her to stay low, and stay behind me. They were coming right towards us, so I moved up about 20 yards to the closest cover-- a small pine tree. I then stood up, and could see the entire heard. There were 3 nice bulls, several spikes, and a bunch of cows. Easily 20 in the heard. They were continuing to come closer, and by the time Brandi moved out from behind me to take her shot, they were right at 100 yards. She moved out from behind me, saw this bull turn, and shot it while standing freehand with the Browning X bolt!! She had a bull tag and a cow tag, and both of us prefer meat in the freezer over antlers on the wall, so we wanted to take the first shot we possibly could. I had a cow tag as well, but wanted her to get her first elk, so had her take the shot. Fortunately, this bull was the first one to turn and give a shot. I've shot my share of deer, bear, and elk over the years, but I have NEVER been so excited about any of them as I am about this one that my wife took. It is her first big game animal of any kind!! I will be taking my little cousin on his first big game hunt this December, and I'm HOPING to get him on something like this as well.

Nice going, RT. Congratulations to your wife! Lots of great steaks and burger and roasts in your future.
I moved this to Shooters Bench, 'cuz that is where it belongs.

Rod, too.

Helluva beginning. How do you top that! Shoot the next one with a handgun of some kind? I'm working on that part! She has very weak wrists from some issues when she was growing up, so I'm trying to think of something that will work. For now, just enjoying the success!

You coulda matched her shot and had a cow nearby to process. Yeah, I thought about doing that. But decided against it so I could focus on her getting a clean shot, and helping mark where it was when she shot. I still have my tag, and still have till the end of January to fill it. Unless there is a ton of snow, I should be able to get another hunting trip or two in before the end of January. But even if not, this hunting season will always rank as one of my best.
