All of you "PRO" coyote hunters out there...I am looking for recommendations on your favorite predator calls. If you can, provide the brand and name of the call. I guess I will buy the ones that seem most popular among you guys.
Me and a buddy were turkey hunting on a gas line this weekend and called a young coyote in to about 10-12 steps (where it came out of the brush) and shot it with a shotgun. Then a couple hours later had one come charging in to about 40-50 yards but bolted before we could get a shot. I started thinking about what a great opportunity this could be to hone my handgun hunting skills (I need a lot of honing).

I'd go with an electronic call(Foxpro). Especially if you are starting out and using a handgun.

If you can see the coyote before he sees you, try lip squeaking. Simply make a kissing sound with your lips. I have called several in using that method. Commercial hand calls, Haydels makes the most user friendly in my opinion. Sound like anything dying and put some emotion in it.

I like to use mouth calls. The Ed Sceery line of calls all have a good sound to me. I like the cotton tail and jackrabbit. The Burnham Bros. MB-1 Mini-Blaster and the Haydel's BR-84 are also good. If you go with an electronic call try a Coyote Pup Distress. It works great this time of year. Just be ready when you turn it on. If the old girl is out there she will come in hard and fast.

i don't consider myself a "PRO" by no means, but I have been fortunate enough to drop a couple 'yotes with a 15" 308 Encore. I have found that the open reed type calls, regardless of manufacturer, are effective. I like their versatility. From a bark or howl to a high pitch bird distress with one call! Where I hunt, the dogs just don't seem to respond to the typical cottontail distress. I did discover, this turkey season, that my gobbler locator crow calls pulled in a couple dogs. A 3.5" 5 shot load does a number on those critters! Don't be afraid to try different things! I've called a couple in with my imitation of a housecat in distress! Good Luck! It is a humbling sport with a varmint rifle!

My favorite is 'Coy, Coy, Coy' - 'Yote, yote, yote' Actually, my brother and I have had the best luck here in the Central Pa farmland with a the wounded rabbit squeal. We've taken a few Fox too. Put on your camo, snuggle up beneath a good 'ol Eastern Hemlock and wait em out.

Since my passion for Calling Coyotes started I have used many, many different brands and types of Mouth Calls. Some have not stayed around here long at all, while there are a few that remain. For mouth Calls I have kept the following:
Sceery AP-3 Closed Reed Jackrabbit Distress Call
Sceery AP-7 Open Reed Predator Call (can also be used to make Juvenile Coyote Barks, Howls and Crys)
Crit'R'Call Song Dog (with out tube extensions, and a modified reed) (This one makes great Coyote Vocalizations)
Crit'R'Call MINI Predator (Open Reed Predator Call will produce similar sounds to the Sceery AP-7, but much more compact).
Primos / Randy Anderson Double Wammy (Double Reeded Open Reed Coyote Howler. (with the megaphone removed makes a great dualing distressed rabbit sound)
Lastly an old Woods Wise Open Reed Coyote Howler (I have modified this one with a home made reed, and added a cut down transmission funnel as a megaphone. Quite easy to blow and makes good Coyote Vocalizations.
In addition to the above mouth calls I have built Electronic Predator Callers for the past 8 years or so. These can be about as simple as you want, or as complicated as you want them to be. For the most part I like the RIO 600 MP3 Players for the sound source. The RIO 600 is discontinued, but can be found on E-Bay. I currently have 20 trakcs of sounds on my RIO 600 that vary in length from 30 seconds to 3 minutes in length. With the REPEAT function of the MP3 Players repeating the track provides for continour play if desired.
Calling in a Coyote and killing said Coyote with a Speciality Handgun ranks right up there in thrill factor. I have been fortunate to do it a few times over the years. The one major key to success is your set up and concealment (camo) and a good shooting rest (well at least for me that is).
Good luck, and remember no two people blow a mouth blown call the same so what may work for me may not work for you.

sounds like great recommendations here. Definitely learn to howl with the open reed calls-- that's the ace-in-the-hole IMO.
