I decided to go back to a S&W 460 XVR for my primary deer hunting weapon. I had one a few years ago and hunted with one and had good success with it but then decided to try a 44 Mag that was a little friendlier (noise and recoil) and cheaper to shoot but after having to pass up a couple shots last year in the 200-225 yard range with the 44 Mag because I just wasn't totally comfortable shooting that distance with the 44 Mag, I decided to go back to the 460 this year so I have the capability to shoot out past 200 yards if the opportunity presents itself.
I did a trade deal yesterday for a barely used S&W 460 XVR with the 8-3/8" barrel (just like I used to have) and a Leupold VX-III 2.5-8X32 handgun scope already mounted on it and it came with a few boxes of the Hornady 200 grain FTX ammo so I just had to get out and shoot this gun this morning to see how well it was going to shoot.
I tightened up the screws on the scope just a tad more than where they were already set, which was about 17-18 lbs, up to about 25 lbs and I knew that might change the impact point a tad as the original owner stated he had it zeroed @ 100 yards and I wanted to zero for 150 yards for now, and I may zero out to 200 before I'm done. I started out @ 75 yards and it was shooting a little high and to the right and after shooting half a dozen rounds at that distance getting it closer to where I thought it should be for 75 yards I took my 12" AR500 steel target out to 150 yards and started sending a few more rounds down range. It took several more rounds for me to get it to where I was satisfied with where it was hitting but I'm more than pleased with the way this gun is shooting out @ 150 yards. Here's the gun itself............ And here's my shooting set up out of the back of my truck........... And here's the final results. This is 3 shots @ 150 yards on my 12" steel target, 2 of the shots were basically right on top of each other............. I can't wait for deer season now!

I love how the 500 S&W and 460 Just causes paint to flake off in chunks when it hits steel

Zee..l just love my SW 460 PC Hunter. 10 1/2''... lt really gets the job done.. My favorite bullet is Hornady's 45 cal 225gr FTX. Designed for 45 Colt, lt works great in my 460 @1700fps...Hitting those 200 meter Rams it Bang/Flop... NOT flop/bang when l hit them with my SW 44mag @1100fps.. l decided to try and use the 225gr FTX after talking w/Hornady about this bullet.. They told me the 225gr FTX was good for 1800fps.. Hodgden gave me some data for a 225gr bullet for 1700fps. l know its not max velocity for a 460... lts fine for me.. A lot less recoil/muzzle blast than 2300fps full power 460 loads

A lot less recoil/muzzle blast than 2300fps full power 460 loads I'd be really interested in that load data. Would love to try to get a 1700-1750 fps load going in my 460 with those bullets to see how it would shoot for me.

I highly recommend the 240 grain XTP-Mag. One of my current loads pushes that bullet at a little over 1700 fps out of the exact same model as yours.

Your 460 looks like a great setup for anything that walks the planet. A great gun.

Looks good IAshooter. I like the setup in the back of the pickup rather than having to unload the bench every time (I'm in a boat that will not allow me to leave my stuff there all the time). Good shooting.
