After seeing what Franchise did to a large nilgi with his 416 Barnes I became curious as to the power that a single shot handgun can hold. What other single shot handguns do you guys own that are close in power to the 416 barnes??

The most powerful barrel I have for my Encore is my 15" 300 Win Mag, but that's not even in the same league as Franchise's.

With the XP action you can go with the 338 Lapua case and improve it. Of course you can neck it up If you go with a non designated bolt action, think Chey-Tac case or basically theskyisthelimit.

Single shot 460 S&W is the only single shot barrel I own.

The biggest thumper I have had was a 45/70 Contender. I realized that I don't need that much thunp for the critters I am likely to hunt. More power to y'all that are packin' the mega heat ;-)
Rod, too.

But what's wrong with my SSK Custom 416 Rigby I have posted in the bragging board? my 350gr WFP over 45gr of 5744 still gives me more than a 45-70, and the 350 Speer over a full case of 4831sc qualifies for the 805 Tank Destroyer BTN....but it is a handful. I hope Mr. Black Bear succumbs to it on Saturday! My 15" 444 Marlin is fun too!

Wapitirod has (had?) a 458 Win Mag Encore, and he built at least one 458 Lott Encore for a customer. I don't think you can chamber anything much more powerful in the Encore platform than that.

You can put the 470 Capstick in a Competitor Single Shot. The 458 Lott in a handgun loaded to its potential, makes the 475 Linebaugh and 500 JRH seem like 38 Specials. The GREAT thing about all of the guys that have these "big" guns is that they use them...they hunt with them...and they take game with them. A big gun is useless if it is not hunted with

At what caliber, do you guys feel, does recoil get "out of hand"??

458 LOTT would DEFINATELY be out of hand! But I would HAVE to try it. Once.
I have a 500JRH, and full house loads with it are enough for me. I shot a full house load out of it single handedly once. Once! And that was only because I thought the voices in my head had a pretty good reason: "If you're going to own this thing, ya have to do it ONE TIME!". Won't be doing that again....
About ten full house loads in the 500JRH and I'm done for the day. 5 If I'm shooting for accuracy. I do have a light load with Titegroup that is pleasant to shoot all day though also.

At what caliber, do you guys feel, does recoil get "out of hand"?? Can't answer that given my lack of experience, but I will say my muzzlebraked 300 Win Mag handgun is very manageable.

Depends on the weight of the handgun, bullet weight, case capacity, and whether or not it has a brake. At what caliber, do you guys feel, does recoil get "out of hand"??

Started my Large Caliber trip with the 375 JDJ by SSK. With the 270grn Accubonds it was fun. Then had the chance to get a MOA in .376 Steyr- it is a hoot to shoot and have taken game with it using 225's. Then I had SSK make me a Contender 45-70 barrel with magnaport and rib. Shooting the 405's gets your attention. Just recently I stepped off in it and got a Encore MGM full bull 460 S&W with MGM break. Shooting the 250 XTP's is a religious experience. Sheared off the screws that hold a new Bushnell Red Dot on it. Went back with SS screws and so far it is holding. Got a good deal on 100 of the 200 grn all copper Barnes HP bullets. I have loaded some of them and will try them tomorrow for this next week's deer gun season. My uncle had a 416 Taylor Rifle built at Champlin Guns in Enid Oklahoma many years back for hunting Alaska and Africa. I helped him zero the rifle. Not sure I would want a pistol in one. I would like to shoot a Encore or MOA in that caliber once. Mike

It depends on the platform used, barrel contour, length , braked or not, overall weight, grip design, etc. I can tell you that when my FA`s 500WE is loaded with a 400gr jacketed bullet loaded to the max the recoil is literally "out of hand". What caliber single shot has recoil that would exceed that????

50 Alaskan easily. Although in the spirit of full disclosure I have never shot a 500WE but I think a 535gr at 1800fps would exceed it, and I have shot some of those. My load in my FA 475L is the 425gr WLN @ 1425fps Chrono'ed. Alaskan beats it in the recoil dept.

Having zero experience with the .500 WE but, plenty of experience with the .40+ rifle cartridges.........they are enlightening in a rifle..........I'd imagine more so in a handgun. I have rifles chambered in .404 Jeffery and .458 WM. I've oft considered chambering an Encore Pistol in the Jeffery..............just because. Think it would be cool.

I know of one prominent single shot barrel maker that will not make another 458 Lott Encore pistol barrel. The one he made resulted in a broken wrist with factory ammo.
