Hi, Planted a square foot garden this year and have been plagued with intruders. First it was the neighborhood dogs. To avoid war, I went with an electric fence. Dog problem ended peacefully. Next to show up was a cotton tail. He was unfortunately able to come under the electric fence. However he did make the mistake of stepping out of the woods at the back of my yard. He was only 75 yards or so away. I told him he should leave as I went into the house to retrieve the Green Hornet. The Green Hornet is a Custom Contender with laminate Green grip and forearm chambered in 17 Ackley Hornet. My oldest Grandson named it this and claimed it as his upon my demise. It wears a 14 inch Full Bull Bullberry barrel. A Barska 6-20x50MM scope, while not the best optics, does bring the little critters up close for my old eyes. When I returned with the gun poor Mr. Garden Thief was still present. Again I warned him to leave. I next entered my reloading shop and located the proper repellent for this intruder. Came outside and issued my final warning. I then placed the crosshair on his eye and slowly squeezed the trigger. At the crack of the shot his body launched two feet into the air and landed in the same spot he was standing. Upon inspection it was noted he was lacking any structure whatsoever in his cranium. A small piece of jawbone and one ear was the only identifiable features. Needless to say my Square Foot Garden is safe again, at least until the next intruder shows. I have a new 17/222 remington barrel that I haven't shot yet. Well one can HOPE
I do LOVE these sub calibers

Hopefully you got to see the ''Red Mist'' too..

Yes I did get to see the Red Mist. These little grenades are amazing. I can't wait to push them about 4000 out of the 17/222 Rem. I have some 17 grain bullets, purchased from Midway, that should indeed put on a show.

My experiences with the 17 are limited to a 12" Bullberry in 17HMR for my contender. Far and away my favorite barrel. Amazingly accurate, fun, cheap to shoot, and deadly. Your rig sounds like a lot of fun. What sort of effective range do you get with your 17 Ackley Hornet and what do you expect with the 17/222?

karl, It is indeed a blast to shoot. I almost exclusively shoot the small calibers now. I would not hesitate at 200-250 yards with the 17 AH and would feel safe at 300-350 with the 17/222 Rem. If I need more I have a 22 inch 20 Tactical (also shot as a pistol). It is a death ray out to 400-450 yards. All three shoot better than my old eyes will allow. I wish I had stumbled on these when I was young, unfortunately I had to have the big boys back then. My first was a SSK 375 JDJ. It was golf ball accurate for the first few shots. But not a good teaching gun. I got into the sub-calibers to teach the Grandkids. It is much easier to develop good habits with them. They do get a kick out of seeing the hit in the scope. INSTANT FEEDBACK. Safe shooting Doug

Interesting view on it that rings true for me. I was out on a Pdog hunt last weekend and my 17hmr barrel was the go-to walk about barrel due to low recoil, noise and visual feedback through the scope. I shot my 30-30 barrel a few times, but it's tough to see if you connect with that much recoil unless you have a spotter.

REDHAWK, To tell the absolute truth I haven't deer hunted in several years. While it is illegal to hunt deer with 22 caliber or smaller here in South Carolina, I have always wondered what a 39 grain 20 caliber (at close to 4000 fps) would do if slipped behind the ear of a whitetail. If i were going to deer hunt again I would have to borrow my Son's 6.5 JDJ or maybe borrow my first ( Son got it for graduation from high school) the 375 JDJ. If I really started deer hunting again regular, I would probably buy another 6.5x30-30 AI

His brother came out tonight, right before dark. Wonder if he was hunting a meal or his relative? Didn't have the 17 AH with me tonight but, I will the next time. O MY
